Anyone who has an air purifier -

does your air purifier make a smell when it runs?

recently i started noticing a smell. Do I think it is something I am reacting to? I dunno... so sick mild - moderate reactions can go undetected. And I am well aware even the things that don't make me sicker (cause an obvious reaction) can keep me from getting better so...

I am concerned. I am really hoping that it is not spewing out chemicals that it was supoosed to have captured - even in trace amounts.

NOw it is new (like 2 months) and the filters are supposed to last like 3 years. Also it is being ran in a fragrance free house with frangrance free people with the exception of a visiting nurse.

It is an IQ air Gc series multigas. every thing i saw had good reviews. it has 6 setting most the time it is on about 2 or 3. with nurse here i blast it on 6. So its not running full blast most the time and it hardly has anything it actuall has to filter. (nothing is new or been fixed or remodeled in the house so no major outgasing)

I will call the company to ask them whats up when i can but i wanted to get other peoples expereinces first.

Thank you so much for your opinions/expereinces

Oh and I have super severe mcs.I am so sick and in so much pain I really dont need to be worrying if the thing meant to save me is making me sick.

Try running it without the gas filter, if you can. We got a new IQ air filter with the gas filter for odors and discovered the carbon gas filter has a major odor. When we removed the gas filter and left the HEPA and HyperHEPA filters in the machine, we did not smell the odd odor anymore. And when I sniffed the gas filter, I could smell the odor really strongly.

I had an air purifier a while ago with that issue, but I think the carbon was getting dirty too fast. It was an Austin Air, and they claimed their filters last around 3-5 years.

After 6 months, mine began to, well, stink... literally. The air smelled like dirty socks.

Unfortunately, since the carbon and hepa were all-in-one, it required replacing both, which was insanely expensive for that model. Almost as much as an entirely new machine.

I now have two Rabbit Airs, and no smelly issues. I just clean the filters after several months, and the carbon is separate, so that can be washed/cleaned too. Filters are also pretty cheap for that machine.

So I'd suggest trying what razzle suggested too. It could be the carbon gas filter, as carbon/odor cleaners in these things may get smelly earlier than expected.

without the carbon (which would be the gas filters....right?) it is not all that helpful.

the thing is if it did get full...how????? 1 peron with soap and shampoo to filter less than 30 minutes 1 x week for 2 months.... that overloaded it?

i mostly have it as a precaution ...to protect me just in case a smell gets into the fragrance free house. seriously everything is fragrance free ...even the cat litter. my moms foreman grill broke ...the new one smelled...so she bought my grandmom a new one and took her used one that had stopped smelling (i am so senstive to chemicals my food is only cooked in stainless steel/ceramic though.

and my sense of smell is super sharp so if there was a smell in here to be filtered i would Know.

I have to be super careful about what filter i get. if the actual outer casing (or any part of the filter) outgases i am in big trouble.

nothing new can come into the house..... even new clothes trigger me... new anything. i just dont get how it could be full..already

the other thing is that the smell ...when running on 6...is kinda a sweet smell... like a ripe fruit or flowerish smell.... and it never filtered that or anything like that.

Right - I'm talking about the filter itself having an odor from whatever it is made out of. So yeah, outgassing from the new material, or maybe something they used to process the carbon...I don't know what it is.

Our filter made the room smell like machine oil and wet metal before we removed the gas filter...it was making me sick to my stomach and giving me a headache.
