Wondering if it's common for LD patients to also take pain meds during abx treatment? Ive been on and off pain meds for awhile now due to back issues and such, even before I was diadnosed with LD. Took a break and now am having horrible horrible joint pain, losing controlability of my arms due to my elbow pain and swelling. My doc prescribed me Nucynta today, something I've never tried before. Anyone find anything helpful?

Is it a NSAID or narcotic??

My LLMD didn't want me taking NSAIDS. Ssid it could damage the joints.

I've never heard of Nucynta. (boy they come up with weird names for drugs these days!)

Actualli, I'm not sure if it's NSAIDS or narcotic. I know that they said they couldnt call it in to the pharmacy because it is a schedule II controlled substance if that helps your question. The nurse said it was a new pain med.
A blog about the drug said it was like combining pain meds and prozac together.. wierd. I'm in pain, not crazy.. or I'm crazy because I am in pain.

Sounds like it's similar to Cymbalta.

Controlled substance would indicate a narcotic. Hope it works!! Be sure to review the side effects list!!

Doctors have this weird notion that depression causes pain. I disagree.

--correction-- I think it's the pharmaceutical companies who have proposed that novel idea!!

I agree Lymetoo. I couldn't tell you how many times my doc has tried to put me on depression meds. I would tell him I'm not clinically depressed, I love life and am happy generally. Not happy when Im in severe pain or cant pick up my two little boys when they want held.
I don't like how everyone is pushed to be on depression meds. ridiculous.

Obviously this post was awhile ago, but in case someone else does a search for nucynta in the future...

I've tried nucynta before, back when I didn't know all the pain I was dealing with was due to lyme. My pain doctor had tried me on everything else imaginable and nothing had worked, but he said he'd heard of the new drug nucynta and wanted to give it a shot.

I started out with 50mg. I had the most amazing week I've had since I became sick. I went for 40 minute walks without pain, was able to use my hands without any achiness or nerve pain... it was like a miracle!

Then it started to be less effective, so after about a week my doc upped it to 100mg. And it just stopped working completely! I also got really depressed and had strange hallucinations on it.

My doc says he should have kept me on the 50mg for awhile longer before moving me up to the 100 and then maybe I wouldn't have reacted like that.

I would try it again after how much it helped my pain for that one week, but the hallucinations and emotional effects were so bad for about a month afterwards that I had to tell my parents they shouldn't leave me alone. I am afraid to have to deal with that again!!

I don't know if anyone's had a similar experience since? I think nucynta is a worthwhile drug to try, but make sure you don't start increasing your dosage too quickly. My doc says he has had great results with other patients who went up slowly so I think there is hope for it.
