my daughter began lyme treatment abt 6 weeks ago. she will be traveling out of the country to Costa Rica with my husband.
She is currently taking azith and omnicef as well as probiotics and several supplements.
Anyone have experience going through customs and crossing borders with abx. and prescription medication?
She will be taking 14 days worth of meds and they will be in properly labeled bottles from our pharmacy with daughters name on label.
What abt probiotics?
Not sending her with the usual probiotics because we can"t keep them refrigerated. Thus, sending her with less effective non-refrigerated probiotics.
What abt. b-12 shots?
she takes them daily. The pharmacist put the needles in a bag that has a proper prescription label on it. Pharm stated that it should not be a problem as it has daughters name on all the scipts and none of them are narcotics.

She can't bring the needles for the B12 on the plane, but she should bring the rest of the meds on the plane with her. Make sure she has a note from the Dr and the bottles with her name on it. Other than the needles I wouldn't worry about it. Probably won't even ask, but its nice to have a note just in case.

I traveled extensively with my lyme meds before taking a job internally with my company. While traveling, I went to Europe several times, China, Japan, and a few other countries.
I never had an issue. Ever.
For the plane travel, I would pack the pills I needed to take during the trip in plastic baggies (example: one baggie for my 10:00 AM pills, another for my 2 PM pills, etc). I also brought a bottle of PB-8 probiotics which are good and don't need to be refrigerated.
I then had all of the bottles of my medication in gallon sized ziploc baggies in my checked luggage. This included prescriptions and supplements.
Regarding probiotics...Theralac is actually good, unrefridgerated, for 1-2 weeks. It just isn't good long term. VSL-3 is also good for a few days. So...I would typically take the amount of Theralac I needed for the trip in an extra bottle that I had. I didn't refridgerate them.
No issues whatsoever...even in China.

bcb1200- thank you for sharing your knowledge with me. Daughter is very excited abt her trip. She is 11 and has never been out of the country. She has not been feeling great since starting abx nearly 2 months ago. I remember how crappy I felt when beginning abx. 18 months ago. I know this trip will lift her spirits.
Whitney- yep...the needles for b-12 will be in her checked baggage. Thanks for the reminder. It is so helpful to have the support of a community to help keep us on track. It truly does take a village to raise a child...especially a child with lyme.
I have two other kids. All three have tested positive for lyme and co"s. I have a tough enough time keeeping up with my own meds let alone theirs when they are traveling out of the country. I wrote out a chart to help her remember what med to take and when to take it. Whew!
Again, thank you both for your kindness and support.
