I've been really cold lately even though it's summer in the southern California desert! Not while outside, of course, but if I put the air conditioner under about 75, I'm cold.

Yet in the past I've more frequently been really hot even when everyone else is freezing. I still have bad night sweats too even though I don't feel hot when I wake up soaked. But I have Babesia too.

Could the lyme or Babesia be causing these fluctuations?

Hi Jenn:

We attributed this to lyme impacting our daughter's thyroid.

She was always hot, had day and night sweats from babesia.

She has been on mepron and zith since last May (14 full months). I would guess it took 4+ months before her day fevers stopped. It wasn't till month 11 - 12 that night sweats stopped.

Fatigue has improved a lot this summer (still there but great improvement). Bone pain still there.

I have wondered about this myself. My son appears to have immunity to cold. He never seems to get cold no matter what the temp is outside. He never wants to wear pants or a coat, even when it is freezing outside. Hot doesn't really bother him as much as it does other people but he seems to be impervious to cold

My son is positive for Lyme, Babesia and Mycoplasma

My son is positive for Lyme, Babesia and Mycoplasma. He is on Synthroid for his thyroid and it is now normal when tested.

Dear jenniferk32,
I have an overactive thyroid, and have similar issues. I am always too hot or too cold. I will be walking around with a sweatshirt on sometimes, and others I am so hot I can hardly stand it. Even one degree seems to be extremely noticeable for me. It is so strange!

Sincerely,
Jin

Sound like a thyroid disconnect; when it gets warm, the thyroid continues to push thyroid hormone @ too high a level, and when it finally slows down, it has a difficult time reving up again in response to chill.

Jin, your clinical progression screams micronutrient deficiency related to malabsorptionfor the past 12 years...

I can't turn the air conditioning below 79 or I have to wear a sweater, but I also can't take a hot shower, or I start to pass out. I am hypothyroid, but with treatment it's not bad enough to be the cause of such extreme problems.

I also notice a one degree difference. A one degree change in temp can cause goosebumps and hair standing on end for me! I've read this is due to Lyme inactivating the communication between your skin and the temp control in your brain.

I agree about the malabsorption, IF you have the main symptoms of it along with the chills, etc. I was eventually dx'd by fecal fat testing with severe exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI). My pancreas isn't making hardly any lipase. I have to take outrageously expensive enzyme drugs for life, the span of which is reduced by 20% from this condition.

If you also have Rosacea, I'd say it's a virtual certainty you aren't making enough lipase, since the two are very much connected. I've had Rosacea since a year after I got sick.

Sometimes in Lymies, EPI can be caused by SIBO (small intestine bacterial overgrowth), which can be cured with a 6 week program, repeated as needed. 2 weeks of certain ABXs, then 2 weeks of anti-parasiticals, followed by 2 weeks of anti-virals can sometimes get your pancreas going again.

An alternative test called a CDSA is, IMO, the best way to find out if SIBO is your problem. If you have IBS or FMS, be very suspicious, as studies have shown very high rates of SIBO in people with those dx's.

(I am not a doctor, just someone who studied Naturopathy for a couple of years, and is allergic to the ABX and the anti-parasiticals,so I'm stuck with this).

Dear DoctorLuddite,
Which nutrients do you feel are responsible? I know I am likely anemic again. Endometriosis is suspected, but a diagnosis has yet to be made. No insurance is a major contributor. I was on a strict gluten-free diet for 3.5 years, but being unable to afford the good stuff and always having to eat so much corn, rice, and potatoes fed the Candida worse. I strongly suspect zinc, iron, and niacin deficiencies, as well as magnesium.

Dear klutzo,
I was on a strict gluten-free diet and do still worry that it may have been a problem for me. I was so hungry while on the diet for more than a few years, and affording the decent stuff was not possible. My low blood sugar is slightly better since being off of it. Digestive troubles were worse in some ways while I was on the diet due to Candida being irritated. I am sure that the issues are related to lipase being low, since I lost my gallbladder at only 20 years-old in 2003.

I do not have Rosacea, but have acne that seems to only get worse no matter what I do. Eczema has been an issue since puberty. My hormones are extremely out of sorts, particularly my estrogen. Although it is normal, my progesterone was severely low as of March 2010. The bio-identical hormone cream is helping along with taking Evening Primrose Oil, and dietary changes. Without insurance or an income source, things are quite out of reach at the moment.

SIBO is certainly suspected considering my past with antibiotics. I took a minimum of two courses per year from birth until my late teens for constant respiratory infections. Steroids for asthma and birth control pills only added to this yeast-causing mixture. At this point, I am surprised that mushrooms are not sprouting from my ears! LOL! I also took the Helidac Therapy for H. Pylori for 2 months straight following my gallbladder surgery. It nearly killed me!

I was told constantly that I had IBS from the time I was a teenager. However, I never believed it. There were times I could eat something and be fine and then become ill if I ate it the next day. I realize now that those foods contained phyto or xenoestrogens and that the hormones must have built up in my system over time. Limiting meats and dairy, as well as avoiding cottonseed, sunflower, and safflower oils makes a difference. The excruciating labor-like menstrual pain shooting from my uterus down into my rectum has decreased, but the morning-sickness feeling from nausea that is often unbearable lingers. Endometriosis is likely a culprit, but lack of funds prevents diagnostics. Meanwhile, I will take note of the information you provided for when medical testing becomes possible. Thank you!

Sincerely,
Jin
