Hi,
I was bitten in April and got on antibiotics within a week - doxy. After that I still had symptoms and was on amoxicillin for 8 weeks - still had symptoms and now am on rocephin via picc line. My doc is no LLMD and said I could have a few beers occasionally - I did on Saturday and since then the past 4-5 days my pains have come back to a high level (mainly elbows, and shoulder - but pain is intense for a few seconds and then goes away - before saturday I felt almost no pain) and I am becoming very fatigued again. The headaches have not come back yet, but I feel that the rocephin isn't getting the job done - I've been on it 2 weeks. I have only been going to an infectious disease doc, not a LLMD - is this normal with rocephin? Is the drug working? I seem to be getting worse? Has anyone else experienced this? I am nervous because I am in a demanding grad school and need help kicking this lyme ASAP I don't want to have to drop out. I have a break from school for ten days starting tomorrow - should I try to travel to a LLMD or wait 2 more weeks to see if rocephin works? I would be willing to travel anywhere to get rid of this. How hard is it to get in to see the top specialists? Please help me I don't know what is going on with my body or what to do?

Ok - first - please be aware of yeast infections that can happen when on abx - and beer will not help that! And lowers your immune system so that is the last thing you need when you are trying to beat lyme.

Next - it's very normal to feel worse before you are better -it's called a herxheimer reaction. You are killing off the bugs so you feel worse so just try to stick through it, I know it's rough but it should/will get better!

I am on rocephin too -but not taking the picc line out yet - I am starting to feel some relief (or maybe I am a big ball of cysts who knows) but hang in there!

Also- fighting lyme is not a sprint, it's a marathon so please try to be patient.

I would highly suggest going to see a LLMD. Why don't you make an appt now (as you won't be able to get in right away) and then keep taking the rocephin until you see the LLMD.

Did you post in seeking dr section for a LLMD near your area?

peguingirl di a good job of explaining things..

i just wanted to second the llmd. lyme is more complicated than lyme. there are also other infections that ticks carry that could be present and need to be addressed. also you can get yeast infections like penguingirl said. are you taking a probiotics?

just so u know rocephin can cause gallbladder issues. I ended up losing my gallbladder to rocephin. I think there is something you can take to prevent gallstones. I am sorry I dont know what its called. maybe someone else will come along and tell you or you could start a new post asking.

Oh it's called Actigal. Good point Azure - forgot to mention that.
The generic name is Uridosol or something like that. I take 2 pills a day.

Make sure to take high quality probiotics - such as VSL#3, Therlac, Florastor. It would be good to take at least one of each twice a day separated from the abx by at least 3 hours. But if you're only on IV that is not an issue - doesn't go through the stomach. Make sure you are also taking liver support as abx is hard on the liver.

And detox! And no sugar!

And you need plenty of sleep!
