I had an extreme herx reaction to Flaygl but not Tindamx at all. My LLMD thought that maybe it was hitting Babesia we didn't know about. But now I'm on Malarone and I feel a little worse but nothing compared to Flaygl.Just more fatigue.
Any ideas on what the heck I might have been killing with flaygl. It's the only antibiotic I've herxed on severly including IV's and just about every other antiobic out there. I'm so confused!!

I this herxing business is so confusing isn't it? I was on 2 IV antibiotics and only herxed slightly if at all. Then I started Artemisinin and I felt horrible!
Today was the first day of Flagyl for me and so far so good. I stay on this for 7 days then off... so I'll see if I'll herx on this as well. I don't have any answers for you just that I'm as confused as you are!!

In the past hubby has ended up in the ER and hospital from both tindamax and flagyl. But the flagyl was definitely a worse reaction.
What dose of malarone are you on? Hubby does not get much effect from malarone unlesss he is on at lesat 4 tablets daily. We cut back from 6 to 4 tablets when he added back some other babesia meds.
I think your doc was probably right about the flagyl hitting babesia. But if you really want to test the theory try combining flagyl, malarone and artemisinin. And if you are really brave add in some bactrim and clindamycin and lariam.
I can hardly believe that hubby is taking all of those meds, yet that is what he seems to need. He still runs higher fevers on the days when he pulses the IV flagyl 2 days per week. But the fevers on the non-flagyl days seem to be coming down slightly. And he is still killing off red blood cells according to his bloodwork.
Still working on getting the artemisinin dose up. We are doing that in 4 days on 3 days off cycles. He started with 2 capsules per day of the art this time around and increases it by 1 capsule each week. Will be up to 5 capsules total daily this week. The goal is to get to 12 capsules daily I think.
This is not medical advice, just my opinion based on hubby's experiences.

I pulse flagyl 3 days a week (that's what I can tolerate), and I herx worst on those days. I have it combined with Malarone right now (among others), and I definitely herx with some symptoms more than others.
Bea, good to know about the dosage of Malarone. I don't seem to herx much on it without the flagyl, and I am on 2 per day. I see my LLMD in 3 weeks, so it may be upped at that point. And I don't know how your husband's body can stand those meds all together. Someday you need to write a book about all of the treatments you all have endured. You could probably advise med students about the pharmacological aspects of these diseases.

For what its worth, Flagyl is just a much harder drug to tolerate than Tindamax. It has more side effects and a higher incidence of them, including those that could be confused for a herx reaction or just the overall malaise that antibiotics as a whole can create.
I haven't noticed a great deal of patients who say they have a predictable and uniquely defined herx experience (Personally, I do not so my own experiences are unhelpful) and report that Flagyl triggers them but not Tindamax. They both "work" equally in most cases as best as we can tell, so prescribing Flagyl over Tindamax is often a cost issue, if anything. Flagyl is dirt cheap and generic - Tindamax is still patented and expensive.

Wow, If I took Malarone and Flagyl together that would be bad news. Props to your husband Siebert for atttacking that all at once. I think I may have to go back on Flagyl if I like it or not. It was killing something hardcore, there was no way what I was experiencing was a side effect.
Really sucks you have to feel worse to get better..
