Does anyone know what the difference is (besides cost) in using IV Rifampin vs. the capsules? Does IV really work better?
My child was on orals - with little effect. The LLMD wants her to do IV Rifampin 4 days, then Flagyl 3 days - twice a day. She's been on IV Rochephin for 6 months w/mepron/zith - with very little improvement in psych symptoms (bipolar II).
Also, IV Rifampin is VERY expensive! I was quoted Rifampin at $70/day and Flagyl is $24/day from Infuserve (usually very good prices). Does anyone know how to get this cheaper?
I have no idea if insurance will cover this... is it really worth the huge cost, if orals will do the same thing?
Confused papa, racer

I've done both. Got more benefit from IV. actually still have two weeks worth of it and thinking of tossing it in.
rifampin is a great drug and IV is the best administration you can get. It's a win;win

I did a number of months a year or so ago with oral Rifampin, not much change in symptoms.
I just finished my first week of IV Rifampin, was feeling pretty badly the first few days, now am leveling out. It's too early to say if this will be really beneficial for me, but sure hope so! Figured it was worth a shot. I have an extremely irritated CNS and hoping this will provide some relief. Will be adding IV Zithro in a few more days. Time will tell for me; but, it might be worth a try for your daughter if the oral form didn't help much. Just my opionion. Good luck. TS
