I got a prescription for Probenecid. I haven't added it to my abx since I had a very tough time with Biaxin (have since stopped). Now I'm just on Amoxicillin (no issues with that one).
Has anyone taken this med and have any feedback?

It's supposed to help keep the amoxy in your system longer .. makes it more effective. So get busy with it!!
(I never took it.)

It's to keep the amoxy in the system longer. You might herx when you start it, but it's because of the amoxy, not the Probenecid. You really need to be taking it otherwise the amoxy gets out of the system in a couple hours.

You're wasting your amoxi if you don't take it with probenicid. You are wasting your time also.
The probenicid doesn't cause any reaction. It is NOT an antibiotic. It just keeps the body from filtering out the amoxi in 1 to 1 1/2 hours. Without it, the amoxi will never build up in your blood and won't be able to kill any lyme.
So, no sense taking the amoxi.
From page 14 of Burrascano:
"With cell wall agents such as the penicillins, kill kinetics indicate that sustained bactericidal levels are needed for 72 hours to be effective. Thus the goal is to try to achieve sustained blood and tissue levels. However, since blood levels are extremely variable among patients, peak and trough levels should be measured (for details, refer to the antibiotic dosage table). Because of its short half-life and need for high levels, amoxicillin is usually administered along with probenecid."

So i think it mentions this in the guidelines but can probenecid be used with ceftin effectively? Anybody tried?

I have taken 1 month of Amox, 3 g/day, 1 month of Amox with probenecid and now I am waiting for insurance approval for IV Rocephin. I felt no differently with the probenecid but apparently I am not absorbing the abx enough to do the job. The abx caused some herxing (peripheral neuropathy and foot pains) but not anything that bad.
I have seen some improvement of my symptoms but given I have white spots on my MRI of the brain and joint pains that continue and some level of fatigue that remains, the IV treatment is needed.
I would take the probenecid and give yourself a chance to avoid the IV stuff. I am allergic to a lot of medicine and have not had a problem so far.

Thanks for the feedback, no issues thus far with the Probenecid. I have several more weeks before I can get in to see a LLMD.
I've definitely improved with the Amox and supplements. So I don't think it's been a total waste of time. I'm scared to think where I would be now without any sort of antibiotic. I was started on Amox because there was a possibility of pregnancy (We were trying to get pregnant around the time I found the tick and symptoms started.). Thank God I'm not pregnant!
