We had my daughters picc arm xrayed just 10 days ago and everything was ok. However, her next bandage change resulted in the line being pulled out 1cm. The entire process was extremely problematic, (not done by our usual great picc nurse).

Now my daughter has a poking pain under her arm between shoulder and elbow. We hesitate to expose her to another xray...

Has any one else ever had similar?

I'm not sure I understand... why was the line pulled out 1cm?

How long ago was the line placed? Both of my Hickman and Picc line took WEEKS to heal. I had a lot of complications and pain and bruising/hematomas. So for me I did not heal well or quickly for that matter.

Can they do a digital x-ray which has less radiation exposure?

Wish I would offer more helpful advice but have no experience with this--

I hope all is okay and she is pain free soon!

How is the PICC line functioning now? Are you able to get brisk blood return and flush easily? Are her infusions running in at their normal rate or slower?

Is the pain new? Is it constant? Does anything make it better or worse? How bad is the pain?

Does her PICC line arm look normal or swollen? Does the insertion site look good (no signs of infection)?

How is your daughter feeling in general?

There are lots of things that could cause the pain. It would be best if you could call her nurse or doctor. If she has home health care there is usually a nurse on call to help in situations like this. The nurse or her doctor may also decide if she needs further evaluation at the hospital.

Take care

DD has had the PICC for over 5 months with very little complication. It has been a lot easier than I thought.

The line was pulled out a little by mistake, during a bandage change, by someone who is not her usual PICC nurse.

D describes her pain as "pokey" and intermittent. No swelling or redness. Her line flushed and infused a little slowly yesterday and her temp was/is normal.

Today the line flushed normally but she has slight soreness in just one spot 4 inches below where the pokey pain was. I am starting to think she could have slept on it the other night or used it too much that day. Or maybe when the line was moved it caused some slight bruising? Not sure.

We see her PICC nurse tomorrow. Maybe we will have to make another visit to the hospital as well tomorrow. [Frown]

Thank you for the help and hugs.

You could try applying a warm compress to see if that helps reduce the pain for tonight.

Oh ic... well that happened to me 2 weeks ago! I am allergic to everything so we do not use the statlock. So my line is always dangling and it got stuck to the nurse's glove. She then accidentally yanked it out by 1/2 inch. Boy did that hurt! It's still pretty sore not but not oozing (like my Hickman). So I'm just keeping my eye on it.

I hope it it will resolve for you. Good luck. Can't wait to get the thing taken out!
