I have lived in 9 states (from coast to coast), been in every state, Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, Bahamas, lived in Japan and hiked/camped in alot of these places. I have had tick bites and mosquitoe bites in most of these places .

Are the tests for coinfections specific for certain regions? If they are, how in the world (no pun intended) would I know which ones to get?

If my LLMD doesn't treat for these, is there an herbal remedy or something else I can take?

Most of the people I have read about on these pages have had co-infections with lyme. I have several co-infectios, the most common are bartenella, babesia, erlichia. But other regions have other co-infections. I was taking until I developed c difficile, the Byron White herbs, A-Babs for babesia, A-L for lyme and A-Bart for bartenella; there are other herbal protocols Zhnag, Cowden, and a yahoo group that follows the Buehner protocol. Do a search on this site for herbal treatments and you will find a wealth of info. I like the BW herbs thought they were good. The BW herbs also sort of test you for the infection-if you herx on them then you know you have it....80 bucks a bottle but so much cheaper than the blood tests, and probably more accurate. there are also viruses, Stanford University has a lab for those, Timaca recently posted about the lab I think. So you could have parasites too. There are lots of posts here about treating parasites with herbs..salt/c too. Basically once the dooor is open lots of critters come in. I don't know how specific to a region any of thsese infections are or if it matters in terms of the herbs, the herbs tend to be broader in their activity-as are antibiotics, they kill alot of things not just one bacteria...for me they killed the good bacteria I needed to keep c diff in check. read and search on this website and you will find out more detailed info than I know.

I wouldn't exactly say that the coinfection tests are specific to certain regions of the country.

Generally, in the past, the most prevalent strain of babesia in the eastern part of the U.S. was babesia microti. Likewise, in the western part of the U.S., the strain was babesia duncani. So, Igenex came up with "Eastern Panels" and "Western Panels" that test for the most prevalent strain of babesia in that region.

Now, however, there are more and more cases of folks in the east having the duncani strain or both strains, and vice versa.

So, if you look at the Igenex test request form, you will see what I am saying and you will see how you can also test for all forms of babesia if you desire. The form is here:

http://igenex.com/files/PATIENT_TEST_REQUEST_FORM.pdf

When it comes to lyme and the other coinfections, Igenex is testing for the strains of lyme generally found in the U.S. and the other coinfections don't differ by regions of the country.

So, you can just test for lyme and all the coinfections, being sure you test for both strains of babesia.

If you got lyme in another country, like in Europe, I understand they have different strains of lyme there. Since you name Japan, you may want to call Igenex and ask if they know if the Japan strains of lyme are the same as what they test for. I don't know anything about the strains of lyme they have in Japan.

Regarding babesia, it seems the treatment is the same for both strains, so treatment-wise, you don't have to worry. The problem is if the doc tests you for only one strain of babs and it comes back negative so he thinks you don't have babs. In the meantime, you DO have it, but just the strain he didn't test you for. If that happens, you could end up not treating babs for a long time due to not testing for both strains. That could mean that you won't start feeling better until he discovers that you actually need babs treatment also.

Thank you both for your help, I do need to research more on the herbs and co-infections.

mom, take a look at the article in this thread:

http://flash.lymenet.org/ubb/ultimatebb.php/topic/1/111126

It is talking about a strain of lyme found in Japan.
