Yup... Recently diagnosed with UC after ten years of symptoms. This diagnosis is confirmed at the celular level. Here's the problem. For two years I have been maintained fairly well with Asacol (Mesalamine) that is an oral anti-inflamatory that mainly works on the colon and isn't absorbed to any significant degree. However, it's starting to not work as well. We still have the option of doubling the dose but that would take me to the maximum dose. This is first line treatment. After that you go to immune suppressants... short-term Prednizone, Immuran, etc.. I fear I may soon be between a rock and a hard place, the hard place being surgery. Anyway, anyone else dealing with this?

I was never diagnosed, but I did have MAJOR digestive issues (constant watery diarrhea for two years), though my symptoms were more along the lines of Crohn's than UC.
I had SEVERE parasites that did not show up in the colonoscopy, upper endoscopy, or parasite stool testing. I treated parasites for many months.
I also used many of the Body Ecology Diet's principles to heal my gut, mainly fermented food.
You might look into VSL#3, it's for UC. It's a heavy duty pharmaceutical grade probiotic.
You might also think about whether bartonella is contributing.

I'll look into the diet. What are the principles behind it?

I have a history of Crohn's colitis, and I have Lyme & Co.
I do much better on a grain-free diet. Have you read either Specific Carbohydrate Diet?
Are you taking probiotics, specifically VSL #3 Double Stength, which is available by presciption only with an indication for the treatment of UC/Crohn's?
I'm sorry you are suffering---I hope you don't have to take steroids.
