It worked for me. Got rid of babesiosis microti that way (with pulsed artemesinin) and treated bart with it also.

It is now over 6 1/2 years since I completed my treatment and I am still symptom free, enjoying my life.

how do you know about your strains? i have the problem that all tests available here in germany (that are pcr, antibodies) are negative. but we are nearly 100% sure i have babesia, because i treated lyme for 2 years and still feeling very ill. my worst symptoms are fatigue and air hunger. and i had a terrible reaction on artesunate.
i was bitten by the tick in Mediterranean area which is epidemic for babesia. but i dont know which strains they have there

cant find out the strains yet.

what i read out of lymenet until now is that duncani is propably the hardest strain to treat.

as TF said he/she got rid of microti with bactrim/artemisia - does anyone believe that most strains except duncani can be treated with bactrim/arte? i think i ll give it a try at least!

@tf could you mail me your dosages?
thank you

By the way, my lyme doctor prefers mepron/zith for babs, but I couldn't take zith or any of the other meds that must be combined with mepron. That's why he treated me with the Bactrim DS.

My doc said that it takes twice as long to get rid of babs with Bactrim as compared to mepron/zith. So, I was on the Bactrim almost one full year.

I will send you my dosages.

I have tried to research this before. Divergens or EU-1 are European strains- they are not tested for by Igenex as far as I am aware.

There is some info about it in cattle, but not much about it in humans !

DS, 12, took Bactrim DS for Bart, but I think it worked on Babs. Horrible mind confusion, excessive sweats, crying/anxiety.

Not trying to scare you, this was just our experience. Went back to rifampin to knockout the Bart and will go after Babs later.

I took a high dose of Bactrim DS (two QID) along with Clindamycin and Art for 30 days.

Nothing no change in my mental state, Babs still present according to FISH. I'm not saying it wouldn't work for you, but it didn't for me.

This is after multiple rounds of Mepron/Zith/Art.

No, we did not get rid of the Babs yet. We are focusing on the Lyme and Bart. His main symptom now is anxiety.

TF ,
would you send me your dosages also ? I am starting Bactrim today ,
after being on a natural Babs treatment program that didn't seem to

quite be doing it for me ... I have a few bottles of Art kicking

around from last year ... curious how you combined them ... as I

think a combo will be much more effective... bummed to read

above that it could take twice as long to work though ! What did

the Mepron and Zith do to you ?

thx for any help !

@nanaaaaa

Mepron/Zith/Art didn't work for the "dizzy, tipsy, spaced out feeling". It did helped with the fatigue. I didn't have any other Babs sx.

I never herxed or had any flares either while on this protocol?

Can I jump in and just ask: Looks like Mepron/Zith is the norm. What about Mepron/Biaxin???

Now back to the regularly sheduled program...

Karensky

Zith gave me hives, so it was out. Biaxin gave me total anorexia (could not eat one bite), total insomnia, and anxiety.

I am sending you my complete treatment protocol.

TF: So is bactrim best with one that has microti?

I have duncani (i got a positive through quest of all places) and I am on a bunch of other things for babs. I take 3 tsps mepron, I am also on 4 tabs malarone, just started plaquenil, alinia, and biaxin.

I would really like to take bactrim out b/c I don't know if it does anything.

I don't know the answer to your question. All I had was microti and I was given Bactrim because I could not take Mepron/Zith or the other meds that must be combined with Mepron.

Here are notes I took from the babesiosis expert, Dr. H, at a lyme conference 2 years ago. He mentions using Bactrim along with mepron and malarone and other things. He says the Bactrim combats Mepron resistance. So, I would say that the Bactrim IS doing something.

Notice that Dr. H. does not mention different strains of babs as needing different treatment. So, I gather from these notes that the strain a person has does not really matter.

Here they are:

2011 ILADS Conference, Toronto, Canada

Lyme & Babesiosis: Updates on Treatment & Diagnosis 2011

Dr. H 10/28/11

He has 20 years of experience treating lyme; more than 12,000 chronic patients
He was in France and China discussing babesiosis. Talked with Chinese CDC regarding parasites

Some of his patients get better with glutathione alone. It opens up the detox pathways (is an anti-oxidant)

Borrelia miyamotoi is showing up in ticks in Hyde Park, NY. This strain is in Japan. We can’t test for it.

There is a new ehrlichia species also found.

Indicators of bad outcome with babesiosis:

male sex, extremely high WBC

We see blood transfusion babesiosis in California. WA-1 is now in the Northeast U.S.. It is found along the entire eastern seaboard. It is difficult to get a positive test for it. LabCorp has a WA-1 test. The FISH through Igenex is also very useful.

He treats with clindamycin with azithromycin, also Mepron, then malarone. There is lots of Mepron resistance. So, he adds Septra (Bactrim). This works well. Also, he uses much higher doses of Mepron due to the Mepron resistance.

He uses coartem (which has Artemisinin in it) Dosage is 4 twice per day. Take at 7 a.m. and 3 p.m.; then switch to 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. It can be pulsed once per month.

You can’t combine this with any med that affects the QT interval.

Babs is spreading world-wide. Babs also suppresses the immune system (based on a study of b. microti)

Artemisinin is not as effective now as it was in the past. Use art when coartem doesn’t cure the person. He no longer uses ketek.

Beta blockers (blood pressure medicines) control these types of parasites. So, use them as an antagonist. We need a study on this. Heparin may also inhibit babs. Need a large study on this.

Curcumin (a herb)--he is now using it to treat babs. Published studies show it is useful for malaria.

Cryptolepis has been used in Africa for malaria. There is a published study in Ghana. It had a 93% cure rate (a 50% cure rate in 3 days; 90% cure rate in 7 days) You can get it at: www.woodlandessence.com

If adrenal function is low (patient has a low cortisol), they will not respond to antibiotics.

He told of a patient with intractable babs. They were treated for babs for 5 years and were not cured. Then, he gave them 1 teaspoon of cryptolepis 3 times per day with Byron White herbs. This is making the patient feel well. He hasn’t found any side effects with the cryptolepis. It may not be curative. It lowers the parasite load and strengthens the patient’s immune system.

Brucellosis also causes night sweats, so check for this in a patient with night sweats.

Use malarone for the patient who can’t clear babs. Low dose to maintain them.

We need new treatment options for babs.
