I've heard of people dying from it but wasn't sure what the actual mechanisms are that can cause it. My guess would be heart involvement or ALS.

Lyme/coinfections can also cause severe depression, which in some cases has resulted in suicide.

Jennifer, but remember, you can also get better. Death isn't the only outcome of Lyme. Looking back, as sick as I was, I'm more surprised that I got well than I would have been had I died from it. By the time I was diagnosed, EVERY bodily system was severely affected, yet I came back 100%.
Yes, you can die .... but you can also get back to normal.

I know you regret asking because of the shock of the truth.
The facts are that many do get much better, many suffer for years and, sometimes, lyme &/or other tick-borne infections are fatal.
While this news was shocking and "depressing" to me at first, I think it's really important that every lyme patient know the truth, for many good reasons.
Then, of course, proceed proactively with the utmost respect for our bodies regarding the state of things now and for the challenges ahead.
There is power and strength in education and action. Even if activities have to be sidelined, we can be proactive in our approach to all this.
To ignore the full extent of what lyme can do is what the IDSA and CDC do. We are called to do better than that - to face the truth and proceed in courage.

You are so positive momof6goofy kids. The one thing that I don't like nor appreciate, is when you read on a board or somewhere on the net that a person has died. All that is said in most cases is due to complications. Well you know if the family and friends are cool enough about making that public.. Please tell us what complication. It may sound morbid. But its more education for the lyme community.. And really I'd like to know what the heck happened.

Reading the thread of succes stories only few people posted they are well... Not even 10% ? The thread started 2006 with only two pages until 2011? Thats frustrating.
Still most of us are sick and talking to each other on how to get our life back to normal.
And still relapse is always an issue that no one can answer.
Its like just killing the chetes to a smaller load then feel ok then when they multiply you get sick again.

I am sorry that you are feeling this way. When your body, mind and soul feel trampled, it is hard to not question.
It does get better, even though I am not 100%, I am able to do much more than I could 6months ago.
For most, it is a slow process and that is difficult. But more get better than not. Hold on, stay on the board, and try to find joy even in the smallest things. I will pray for you.

Kram.. I just read that thread today being new here and got the same feeling. It also seems many on long tern meds are not much better.. That makes me wonder. But.. I'm new here so I can't really gage it well yet. I'm sure there are many that swear by their pills and have turned their life around.

The problem with the Success Stories thread is that hardly ANYONE posts there, because if anyone does get better, they either never come back to this forum because they are busy with their lives or whatever other reasons,
OR they do come back to tell us, but they post their own thread about it, which no one ever sees again once it moves off the front page.
I've never been able to figure out a way to search for those threads, because there's no unique terms, and no tags. It's bothered me for years.
I have been taking a break from Lyme forums for a while, but when I was here, All I can say is I saw many people come by to post about true successes, and I tried to convince them to post their info in the Success Stories thread, but they never did.
I would have posted them there myself, but don't feel it's ethical to copy someone's info there if they don't agree to it first.
Please understand that treatment takes time, but it does eventually work for the vast majority of patients. It's true that no treatment is not an option for those of us that are sick. But really that is just like any other moderately serious illness.
As long as folks know their situation, they can treat properly, and they can *and do* get better.

I am sorry that it is upsetting. For certain, Lyme fatalities are rare. The point of the website was to counter arguments that Lyme is no big deal, and never fatal. It was meant to memorialize those who have passed. And it is meant to tell the truth, so that it might inspire others to look for better treatments. And they are looking!
In knowledge there is power, and hope.
