Hi,

This is very odd, but I am wondering if anyone else has experienced intense itchy nipples?

I have had issues with my right breast only since I got sick. Have had u/s and MRI - nothing. I am 29 years old, in case that matters. My right breast seems to have gotten thicker tissue in there since become ill and I was dx'ed wiht fibrocystic breasts (even though only the right one is a problem) last summer. Had unexplained milk production a year ago when all this started.

Now, I am having a flare I think bc arms hurt, legs - things that have not bothered me in a long while and, my right nipple itches so bad. It is unbearable.

Are you on reglan for your stomach by any chance? That causes milk production. See a breast care specialist, you will feel more comfortable with a correct diagnosis. I have had 4 surgeries, this is a symptom get it diagnosed promptly.

Yeast maybe? When I was breastfeeding, my daughter and I shared yeast infections. It made my nipples crazy itchy.

Lactation is a documented Lyme symptom. It's the effect of the infection on the brain/endocrine system more than breast tissue itself.

I also developed a right-sided only fibrocystic breast. After reading about the connection between fibrocystic breast disease and breast cancer, I started on iodine.

I used it topically on my breasts and took seaweed tablets. Then I switched to oral Magnascent Iodine, then Iodoral.

My last mammogram was clean - no lumps!

I also had the itchy right nipple when I restarted Mino, but it seems to have resolved. It's a weird symptom that comes and goes.

Another benefit of the topical iodine was the disappearance of some moles and skin tags that had shown up over my Spleen and Liver areas since Lyme.

Additional benefits of oral iodine are improved energy and thyroid function. Iodine is also a strong antimicrobial - you may herx. That's why I started with seaweed and built up from there.

Lyme is notorious for causing cysts of all kinds and iodine is known to soften cysts. I think most of us are iodine depleted anyway, but I wonder if Lyme contributes to further depletion?

I also had ovarian cysts around the time of my initial infection, and many women with Lyme develop PCOS.

Here's a page to get you started:

I have that too! One of those crazy symptoms! I have had varying degrees of breast discharge too since breast feeding my children- last one weaned 13 yrs ago.

The itching is sooo intense when it happens. I've never worried too much about it being a serious thing b/c I assumed it was another "fibromyalgia" symptom. It feels like the same kind of nerve itchies I get in alot of other places.

That's just a tough place to scratch! [Wink] Really hard when it happened at work. The end of my nose gets the same intense itch too, and not to mention the vulvodynia itch!

I tend to try to just grit my teeth til it passes b/c I know it will go away eventually. Only to return at a later date....

Thanks so much guys! I made an appointment with the breast care center on Thursday just in case. Boxermom, I am on iodine (lugol's) but would also like to try seaweed - can't hurt right? Can you tell me where to get it?
Thanks again!

From page 10 of Burrascano's list of lyme disease symptoms:

"Unexplained milk production;
breast pain"

http://www.ilads.org/lyme_disease/B_guidelines_12_17_08.pdf

I have known other women with lyme whose breast or breasts began to produce milk and cause pain due to this disease.

I have to wonder if a yeast infection is causing the itching.

This will likely be the first time the Breast Care Center had a lyme patient. So, you will likely be the only one who knows lyme can cause this symptom.
