Hi there,
I was on nystatin 6 pills/day and have been on abx continuously since March. I told my doc I think that I have yeast problems, so doc prescribes diflucan for two times per WEEK, and stop the nystatin. Does that sound right?

It took 20 years to find out I'm not crazy.
New bite in 2010 pushed my body over the edge. Positive for lyme, babs, bart, and myco.

That is how my doc prescribed diflucan, twice weekly.

I continued to take nystatin daily because there is no drug interaction between the two. Nystatin kills yeast in the GI tract only, Diflucan works systemically.

If you are confused about your doctors instructions give them a quick call to clarify on monday.

I developed a yeast problem while on antibiotics. Doc prescribed Nystatin at the same dosage you are taking. Took it for approx. 5 months. Basically didn't help my yeast problem much.

Switched to Diflucan 1/day. Been doing that for 3 weeks now and have noticed a huge improvement. Also taking VSL #3 1 packet daily along with drinking kefir.

I took Nystatin ALL THE TIME while on abx... regardless of whether I was taking or not taking diflucan.

since you're only getting 2 pills a week.. I personally would want (for myself) both. Nystatin does not affect the liver.

I went off both diflucan and nystatin at my docs request. She thought that that was the only way to know for sure if I actually had yeast or a bartonella flare. It turned out it was both some yeast and bart.

I have been off of both drugs for 3 or 4 weeks now. I just figured out, due to a nor'easter that knocked out our power for four days, that six little raspberries I've had twice a day at the end of my meals were giving me yeast.

For four days, we ate our meals out. All I could eat was meat, eggs, veggies, cheese, salads, and was quite surprised my yeast issues diminished. All itching everywhere stopped, even off all anti yeast meds.

I also discovered that what my obgyn said was lichens, was actually yeast, because that left after four days too.

So, I FINALLY get that the best way to control my yeast is a strict "Burrascano anti candida" diet.

Try it. You'll be surprised too.

Thank you for all the responses! I am on a strict diet (the bones sticking out of my skin are my proof), and it does help, but it's not enough. I think the yeast was already a problem before I ever started nystatin. Even though I only was diagnosed and treating for lyme this year, I have been on antibiotics on average 5 times per year for the last 20 years, without ever knowing about probiotics until this year.

It just doesn't seem like taking something twice a week will be enough. I will be calling Monday to ask to continue the nystatin alongside it. I do have the paper where the doc clearly wrote to stop the nystatin. Thanks again!

Wow, Lymetoo, I didn't know about the cheese. I have to re-read Burrascano's guidelines frequently (brain can't remember everything).

What kind of cheese should we stay away from, or is it all cheese?

And thank you for all your advice regarding yeast!

Sbh93, when I was taking diflucan and nystatin, I was pulsing it (worked quite well), nystatin one day, diflucan the next.

Thanks Catgirl!

I don't eat cheese anyway--allergic to dairy! [Smile]
