I have noticed that I choke on liquids, not food, from time to time. Has anyone had this with lyme or bart? I mentioned it to my llmd and she said talk to my pcp about it. Why does this happen on occasion

is this very common for babs, I was tested back in 2005 for this but came up negative through igenex, should I be retested and what med is good for this? thanks Diana

I have this problem too. When I tell my doctors they just look at me with concerned expressions on their faces. Not comforting.
I'm not sure what infection this symptom seems to be related to but it does seem to wax and wane.
The unpredictability of it is scary. I can be fine all day then suddenly choke on my next sip of water. It's not just choking for me, I can actually feel it slip into my lungs and it burns like fire. Makes my chest hurt for days afterwards.
Hopefully this symptom will go away as we treat the infections.

Testing is unreliable. Save your money. Many test negative only to find out they've had Babs all along.
Try a round of Mepron/Zith.
Or Artemisinin. It's an herbal constituent. You can order online. Many herx on Art alone.
But don't take it for too long without other meds or herbs on board. The Babs can become resistant to it.

i've done this a couple of times. one time i got choked and just spit out the liquid, ok, i splurted out the liquid and almost choked at the table.
not fun. for me it's bart.

I choke on liquids quite often. I also can't swallow a pill without eating something solid afterward or it just sticks in my throat.
From what I understand, this is very common with Lyme & Co.

yep,, it's happened to mr a few times. Right now treatment mostly for Babs and a virus,,, several times lately . And a few where it hurts so bad I hit my chest to get threw it. Nonna

Babesia Encephalopathy is one of the symptoms of Babesia:
Encephalopathy is a term for any diffuse disease of the brain that alters brain function or structure. Encephalopathy may be caused by infectious agent (bacteria, virus, or prion), metabolic or mitochondrial dysfunction, brain tumor or increased pressure in the skull, prolonged exposure to toxic elements (including solvents, drugs, radiation, paints, industrial chemicals, and certain metals), chronic progressive trauma, poor nutrition, or lack of oxygen or blood flow to the brain. The hallmark of encephalopathy is an altered mental state. Depending on the type and severity of encephalopathy, common neurological symptoms are progressive loss of memory and cognitive ability, subtle personality changes, inability to concentrate, lethargy, and progressive loss of consciousness. Other neurological symptoms may include myoclonus (involuntary twitching of a muscle or group of muscles), nystagmus (rapid, involuntary eye movement), tremor, muscle atrophy and weakness, dementia, seizures, and loss of ability to swallow or speak. Blood tests, spinal fluid examination, imaging studies, electroencephalograms, and similar diagnostic studies may be used to differentiate the various causes of encephalopathy.

I used to choke on liquids and foods before starting treatment for lyme and bart (doxy). It improved greatly before I started treatment for babs so for me I believe it was either lyme or possibly bart.
Maybe it's babs in some cases but I've no doubt that lyme causes it too. Not sure about bart.

Terry, for me it was like a tracheal muscle that was being affected. When I would lie down, I felt like that muscle was so weak, my trachea was collapsing. And the loss of muscle control caused the choking too.
