Recently diagnosed with osteoporosis.

Im 48, post menopausal and it great shape in terms of fitness level.

Currently taking 3000 mg of Vitamin D, Calcium and Fish Oils.

After doing some research it looks like I need to add some supplements. Can anyone offer suggestions?

I see my alternative MD Friday for this issue.

Hi There - I was diagnosed osteopenic and they told me to start those Fosamax, etc, drugs--- I am too young for those...I read up on Strontium and have been taking (although I just got off of since it interacted with one of the abx I am on for Lyme) - it has good success in Europe, but of course, not "approved" here...

Vit K2 with fish-derived Vit A in high dosis is what I have been taking for many months. It puts the calcium where it needs to be -- into the bones --- not the arteries...

Google Dr. K's name with these two and find
explanations better than I can do.

Take care.

I was actually able to reverse some of my bone loss by taking 10,000 units of vitamin D daily for 6 months. The dosage needed depends on how much you weigh. If you are heavy like me, a lot of what you take will just get stored in fat tissue, so you need a high dose.

I dropped to 6,000 units as a maintenance dose, and my vit. D dropped 29 pts., so I am back up to 10,000. I want my vit. D at the cancer protective level of 80-100, since I have two precancers in my stomach. It should be at least 50 for anyone, IMO.

IMO, Strontium is a much better choice than the drugs. Strontium builds NEW bone, whereas the drugs kill the osteoclasts that make new bone and instead makes you retain old bone. This is a bad idea, since old bone is brittle and needs to be replaced regularly. So, your bone density improves with drugs, but your bones are MORE brittle, not less. Typical Big Pharma tactic, putting making money over people, as usual.

If you take Strontium you must get plenty of calcium or it will have the opposite effect and lower your bone density, and if you get the calcium through supplements, (getting it through foods is safer for your arteries), please do not take it within 4 hours of the Strontium, or the Strontium will not be adequately absorbed.

Magnesium, manganese and boron are all helpful too. An apple a day will give you your boron.

I recently read that vitamin D must be sulfated to work correctly, which the sun does naturally. If you cannot get enough through sun, and I sure can't, eating a lot of garlic, onions and other sulfurous foods may help, or theoretically, you should be able to solve this problem by taking MSM.

A lot of early osteoporosis/osteopenia is caused by gluten intolerance or celiac's disease. Many doctors overlook this major cause.

It doesn't matter if you've already had a negative celiac's test. You should do a gluten intolerance test from enterolab.com. That's how I found my problem.

I agree with the above, but also would like to add that inflammation, which Lyme/coinfections causes lots of, can also contribute to osteoporosis.

My DH had severe osteoporosis and has been able to increase his bone density 11% in 1 year without taking Fosamax by taking the following supplements daily:

Calcium
Magnesium
Zinc
Daily Multi-Vitamin/Mineral
Vitamin C
MSM
Cod Liver Oil (Vitamin D, Vitamin A)

He also goes hiking in the mountains on weekends. His bone density did not start improving until he added the fish oil, even though before doing so he was taking prescription high-dose Vit. D. The fatty acids are needed for healthy bone, as is sufficient water and protein intake.

Fosamax/related meds will only either prevent further bone density declines, or only give you at most 1-2% bone density increase per year.

And these prescription medications have serious risks, including destruction of jaw bone, femur fracture, gastrointestinal issues (I think the meds mess with motility and/or gut flora, but this is only personal opinion based on observation of side-effects in family members who have taken the medication), etc.

I personally refuse to take Fosamax/related medications even though I have osteoporosis, because of the risks and the fact that the meds do not build healthy bone (learned this from a bone metabolism specialist's website).

Interesting about Vitamin D needing to be sulfated...that's probably why I have so much trouble tolerating oral Vitamin D - I have problems tolerating sulfur, too...

Thanks for the info...take care,

I did everything right, but still kept losing bone density on the DEXA test.

I took the Strontium, Vit K2-7, Calcium ,Magnesium, vitamin D, zinc copper boron etc, everything named above, and 20 min/day jogging.

I told this to the moderator of [URL=http://www.osteopenia3.com,]www.osteopenia3.com,. She suggested in addition possibly wearing a 10-lb weighted vest for 1 hr/day.

I did , and gained bone on the DEXA next time!

I agree with terv .. magnesium is key. I really like Razzle's list. I take several of those.

I think we need Vit D and mag for sure.

Pamois.. that is awesome!
