Has anybody ever had this? My husband is waiting for his first appt. with an LLMD, which is still 6 weeks out from now. We know that he has Lyme, at this point we're just waiting for tests and an official diagnosis. I've had Lyme and co's for 6 years.

He's been progressively going downhill for several months now and then got a bad sinus infection last week. He went to the Dr. on Saturday and doc prescribed Biaxin and gave him a Decadron shot. He started the Biaxin immediately but that night he developed a bright red rash all over his chest, neck and face. It is not spotty or raised - it just looks like a really BAD sunburn.

He called doc, doc said stop the Biaxin and then prescribed him prednisone. I had a fit over the prednisone and told hubby that is a big no-no (he's new to all this so he doesn't understand the dangers of steroids). So he's not taken anything in two days. No Biaxin, no nothing, but this rash keeps coming back. It goes for a few hours and the reapperas for a few hours. He's also having severe migraines and just generally feels sick. He's been on benadryl since all this started but it doesn't seem to be having an effect on the rash one way or the other.

The odd thing is that I had the exact same rash for the first time ever about two weeks ago. We are sure that we have the same infection. Any thoughts? Anybody else ever experience this type of rash?

Have you looked into scarlet fever? He could have had strep in his sinuses. It isn't always in the throat. My son continues to fight lyme and chronic strep despite 6 months on combo antibiotics. So lyme makes sense, but I can't figure out why the strep is still there after all the drugs. We even removed his tonsils. But he is still running VERY high strep antibodies in his blood after 2.5 years! Sometimes he gets the sunburned rash in a smaller area, but often it's all over his chest and face.

When this started almost 3 years ago he was not on any antibiotics. So for him the rash is not related to antibiotics. My other kids got classic scarlet fever and recovered. He got the same rash, but it kept fading away and coming back, and not behaving like the other 2 kids. It was very strange. Now he's been on lyme treatment for 6 months and did not have the rash at all for those 6 months until 2 weeks ago. Then we saw it again.

I don't know if this helps at all, but your description of your husband's rash made me think of our experience with strep. If you're looking for strep you could ask the doc for a throat swab (cultured, not quick test), ASO titer & antiDnase B titer (blood tests for strep antibodies).

Lauren,

1) Yes, I've had the rash you describe many times.

I assume you've given thought to any new household items or personal care products.

2) I'm so glad you KNEW to tell him "NO" to Prednisone (unless a life or vision emergency). You may have saved his life on that call.

[However, that shot of Decadron - it's Dexamethasone - that he got, that is a corticosteroid. Be sure the LLMD gets detail about this. Steroids from shots can hang around in the body for many months. Sigh!]

3) OLE (Seagate brand is best, link to follow)

Now, I'm not saying this would cover Strep. If strep, you need serious medicine and evaluation as soon as possible. Strep would require specific Rx.

However, as a general support measure, you might consider Olive Leaf Extract to help until the LLMD appointment (but of course call and check to see if this will interfere with any planned testing).

Better yet: ask that LLMD what might be suggested until the appt. and get on a cancellation list, too. Ask the LLMD is he/she knows of a good GP for the time being.

4) STINGING NETTLE (link to follow) may calm down the rash.

Good luck to both of you.

OLE

You can get a relative good brand probably at any nutrition store near you. As Seagate is in California, that would be mid to late next week for delivery.

Seagate is the best OLE, in my book. It's from trees near San Diego and processed in a very particular manner.

I've had this rash before- many times. It usually starts on my neck and spreads down my chest and sometimes onto the top of my back.

It feels exactly like a sunburn. I was getting it before I went on antibiotics, and it stopped after about 1 year of treatment.

I never really tried to do anything about it though

I had a sunburn rash at the onset of my illness. It was rough like sandpaper, too. It felt like the rough side of velcro was being pushed into my skin, and then my soles of my hands and feet peeled a week later. Sorry y'all are having to deal with this!
