My doctor ordered the test kit and I have it in front of me.

Now I'm wondering if I should do Dr.K's recommendations

for collecting the specimen or the instructions that came with the kit.

I'm a little suspicious. I don't want to force the test to say anything.

I just want to know the truth about my son's health.

Is there any reason for me to worry that Dr.K's way of testing would force a positive result?

Thanks in advance. [Smile]

http://www.forresthealth.com/kpu-test.html

quote:
Vitamin Diagnostics offers a test for the related compound called kryptopyrrol only. Recently, they began to offer a test for the hydroxy-hemopyrrolin-2-one (HPL) compound. When filling out the requisition, the practitioner can now select HPL in addition to kryptopyrrol. The HPL test results in a much higher yield.

Dr. Klinghardt finds that in order to get the best possible insight into the patients condition, it is best to avoid all supplements, especially those containing zinc, biotin, and vitamin B6, for 5-7 days before the urine sample is collected. He suggests that patients use a 24-hour urine collection as opposed to first morning urine as the release of HPL complex into urine is not consistent and might be missed in a single urine collection. The sample should be shielded from light. 500mg ascorbic acid should be added to each liter of urine as a preservative.

To further maximize the benefit of testing for the condition, it is best for the patient to be under stress at the time the test is being performed as HPL excretion is known to increase during times of stress.

He also says freeze it before sending it off.

I would follow Dr. K's instructions to the Tee. He is absolutely wise in this matter.

There is no way to get a false positive here but there is away to maximize the chances of the most accurate sample, method, etc.

"The sample should be shielded from light." THIS is very important. Aluminum foil is used in porphyria tests and there is no light at all when blood samples are drawn.

To clarify what I think in meant by "stress" - in

" . . .is best for the patient to be under stress at the time the test is being performed s best for the patient to be under stress at the time the test is being performed . . . ."

If you have questions, call his office but I THINK that means physical stress, not emotional or verbal stress that would make them feel bad.

If you ask an ill person to stand without holding onto something, to do some simple exercises that will push them but not too much - or even to do math or give an impromptu "speech" - well, all that can cause stress.

Also an empty stomach will create a kind of stress that those with any kind of porphryria can find stressful. I would not do this on a full stomach but try to wait until close to meal time, maybe holding that off just a bit if the timing works okay.

Fasting is especially dangerous. (KPU / HPU) are in the porphyria family, so I pull from my mental notes in that area.

A spelling bee would be stress enough for me.

If you want to see some of the test suggestions for other kinds of porphyria, check out the foundation sites in the thread below. You will see some of the rationale behind the suggestions.

But, you can not have to worry so much about all this if you are in the hands of a good doctor who is following Dr. K in this matter.

Thank you very much Keebler. My doctor didn't know about KPU until I asked him about it.

I am off to check out your link. [Smile]
