Sorry everybody, I know livers have been discussed a lot. I did do a search first.

My sons ALT was 76. Not good.

I have to repeat it.

He is not on anything now that would cause that, except maybe for the Enula and GSE I gave him 10 weeks ago.....still not good, because it was normal before that when checked.

So, I've been told the liver is a forgiving organ and regenerates.

I started a liver pack tonight. I am trying to figure out how to proceed with this when it comes to a schedule and possibly adding the flushes in. A lot of people use it for stones, some for detox. I'm working with a very weak system now, and I don't want to overdue it. I'm sure the flush ingredients should be less, anyone with experience here? Thanks to Hens, I have some insight here, but, alas my child is younger.

I also wonder if that's the best place to start. I cannot give him any tinctures with alcohol in them. Also, need to be cautious w/r/to the kidneys which are weak, as well as a very sluggish GI tract.

Then of course there's the brain which we've established is not functioning right either. So, I am trying to detox for the body wellness and also for the liver.

Any remedies or suggestions in lieu of my situation would be great.

In too deep-

My liver enzymes were elevated when I had active LD. In fact, my elevated liver enzymes were discovered during a routine life insurance physical and were the reason I went to the doc. They thought I was an alcoholic even though I very rarely drink! The liver enzymes went back to normal (as did my cholesterol) after a few months of doxy and zith. However, it took 2 more years of various abxs to get my other LD symptoms in check and to get back close to 100%.

You could try milk thistle. I am partial to Solaray's Siliverin. I think Siliverin helped me detox and reduce my herx while undergoing LD abx treatment.

Thanks Jason.

I looked up the product, and it look interesting. How much of this did you take as an adult per day?

Milk thistle is wonderful! I would start with 1 pill twice a day. You could increase to 3 or 4 capsules a day if needed.

Also, my liver specialist told me to drink 3 cups of coffee a day when I had liver issues. If your son is old enough...try that. DO a search on coffee hepatoprotectant....they find it very helpful with alcoholics and hepatitis patients to prevent progression of liver insult.

COffee is a wonderful antioxidant.

Thanks Kimmie.

It looks like Milk Thistle stands up to water.

What brand did your specialist tell you to get Kimmie?

Thanks

I'm so sorry to hear this about your child!

Maybe (Keebler) will see this post, She is an excellent source of information on this subject.

How old is your child? Girl or boy?

Sorry to read of the difficulties your son is having.

I would try the milk thistle.

Sending hugs to you both.

Milk thistle, definitely.

If he's well enough, be sure he has some form of exercise every day. I often forget this, and then my child (who has PANDAS) is much worse.

jackie does your child ever get an itchy red rash on their body?

Ours is around the belly button.

It flares every few weeks.

Just don't know what to make of it.

Thanks Jane and Steve. I was suggested to get the detox tea which has milk thistle in it, so I will try that first.

Hugs

Their hands get awful red and dry, but I don't recall an itchy red rash. My teenager had eczema on the back of her legs years ago. It was awful but eventually she outgrew it. It was never itchy, just annoying and painful.

The psych symptoms are very tough to deal with. I can honestly say though that my youngest is getting better. Finally. It's a long arduous haul, that is for sure.

Take care

Correction to liver enzyme info........

I just looked at the blood work and his level was not 76, but 47.

But, the upper range is 40. On our test it was 34.

So, it's still high.

Trying the liver detox tonight

You mention above about maybe doing a liver flush on your son. It may be far too much for a little body to take.

I don't think a flush is good for anyone. The liver should not flush like a toilet as that could then "flood" and make matters so much worse for the liver, kidneys and other organs.

A castor oil pack over the liver area with some warmth, however, can be very nice.

Slow and steady is hard on our patience but better for our livers.

I hope you can find expert advice on this. Have you seen Dr. K's herx support suggestions for kids?

Liverlife by Bioray, milk thistle, glutathione, ala.

This is what I think of to help the liver- which I also worry about in my young child on medications.

Thanks Keebler, I do like the liver pack a lot, and the tea. I noticed the tea helped my son go to the bathroom the other night, which was great because he has to get these toxins out.

I did talk to a homepoathic Nurse who has worked with Dr. K, and she says no to the flushes as well for my son. I think because it may be too much at this point.

Thanks Surprise for the product suggestions. Everyone seems to think Milk Thistle. It's unanimous at this point. I guess I'm wondering, Milk Thistle protects and strengthens the liver, but does it detox it?

If that's true, first, I think I need to detox, and then protect and strengthen.

I don't know.....maybe it's all the same thing.

Sorry you have to deal with this as well in a young child......rrrrr.

Hugs-

I've come the the understand that NOTHING really "detoxes" the liver. The liver detoxifies itself. Actually, it does not exactly "detox" as METABOLIZE WASTE.

The liver is a miraculous organ but it can't work at lightning speed, especially with faced with the dysfunctions that come with lyme.

It frightens me when I see so many - even the media - toss around the word "detox" as that word can have various interpretations. Some see it as an event, not a steady, gentle process.

We feed it certain nutrients that support the liver cells and functions (mostly so that it will make more glutathione) and then, we hope, that function of metabolizing waste works better.

FIBER is actually one of the best things we can take to help our body move waste. It's not all just the work of the liver or kidneys.

LOTS of vegetables of bright, rich, deep colors will give us antioxidants that help ALL our cells better "detox" and then the fiber from those veggies and select fruits serve to take out the trash, in a manner of speaking, sweeping us clean from the inside out.

Sweating helps, too. The more we can get out other ways (in a controlled manner), takes the strain off the liver and kidneys.

Again, I think Dr. K is the expert on "detoxification methods" for those with lyme, including children. His generosity in sharing information helps us all.

Tilltoson says (somewhere in his book) that if a person does not eat enough vegetables & fruits, it is impossible to be able to enable natural detoxification processes. The antioxidants + fiber are key. Beyond that:

While my doctor has said there are at least eleven kinds of porphyria, this is a good start to understanding how enzyme deficiency can affect the ability to detoxify:
-------

http://rarediseases.about.com/cs/porphyria/a/072000.htm

A Look at PORPHYRIA

There are seven disorders (some say eight) that fall under the general name porphyria.

All involve deficiency in the enzymes involved in the synthesis of a substance in the body called heme, which is found in large amounts in the bone marrow, red blood cells, and liver.

This enzyme deficiency allows normal body chemicals called porphyrins to accumulate in toxic amounts in the body. . . .

It is hard to get a child to eat an array of colored vegetables -
I wish!
Even though she see's mom and dad eat them every night- it is a no way- trust me, I've tried everything.
I have to hide them.

If you go with the Liverlife, go slow to tolerance.
My child has not come back with elevated liver enzymes yet,
but I give milk thistle and glutathione everyday....

Hang in there--
