Hi to all, I am not understanding my blood work. Could anyone help? iron 35 % saturation 9 bilirubin, indirect 0.1 rdw high 15.7 hematocrit 34
hemoglobin 11.5 And finally Ferritin 1207 {this has me worried}
I thought with Lyme your Ferritin was meant to be low...I am so confused. Does anyone else have any readings like this? Thanks

So feratin is ur emergency supply of iron. So if its high-- this is good. It not SUPPOSE to be low-- that means your body doesn't enough. If Iron is low, than it means you are starting to become deficient, but you haven't needed to use the emergency store yet (feratin)....get it?
It means you need to take iron. Try a slow release iron and make sure to take vitamin C with it, to help with absorption.

Whitneys= Thanks for clearing that up. But why do they say your ferritin levls should be no higher than 232? Mine is a lot higher than reference range. My dr is having me take a stool test. Also, wants me to go on ferrous sulfate. I am so weak today and my bloating is so painful.

hm, I've read that a high ferritin level could mean there is inflammation in the body, you might want to check into that.

Hmmm I'm not sure about it being bad--. Especially if he is in fact having you take Iron (ferrous sulfate). Try a slow release (like slow Fe) and the vitamin c should help too.

Thanks guys, I do think its inflammation. I have to do some work on eating right and get Lymph massage. Thanks for rec on type of iron to take, I will pop out today to get it. My Dr is not a LLMD, but he does try.

I would hold off on the iron pills until you determine what is causing your ferritin to be so high.

Get therapeutic phlebotomy, at that level your organs start to rust, get genetic testing for hemachromatosis, this affects the liver, etc. You MUST have a hematologist on board that specializes in HH.

Iron Disorders has an email list that functions as a forum. You might want to join it and post your lab numbers. While most of the people on there have hemochromatosis, they are very knowledgeable about most iron issues and lab numbers.
