Has anyone ever heard of this or had any success with it? A friend of mine who also has Lyme has been dealing with a Naturopath that has her on these Gemmotherapies and I am wondering if there is anything to them and if they might help me.

Please let me know your experiences.

It all depends upon the expertise of the specific ND.

I've been studying (just on my own) naturopathic medicine for many years and never heard of this term -- although it's sort of figured into plant medicine by gathering certain parts at certain times, etc.

Thought it was about gems. With just a Wiki link, I see it's clearly in line with naturopathic medicine, plant-based therapies. So, while I've not heard the term, the practice is nothing new, it's about selecting the best parts for specific purposes.

Now, as to whether the specific plants/extracts work directly against borrelia or other specific vector borne infections, I'd certainly want

only a ND who is lyme literate and ILADS educated, so they really know the science of lyme,

even if the therapies are intended solely for support. And it's vital to know which is which and cover all the bases.

For those new to this term:

Gemmotherapy

[from Lat. gemma, bud, and New Lat. therapīa, Grk. therapeia, medical treatment] is a form of herbal medicine that uses remedies made principally from the embryonic tissue of various trees and shrubs (the buds and emerging shoots),

but also from the reproductive parts (the seeds and catkins) and from newly-grown tissue (the rootlets and the cortex of rootlets). In two instances, remedies are also made from the sap.

This raw material is taken in the Spring (in the case of the seeds, in the Autumn), at the peak time of the tree or shrubs annual germination, in order to capture the various nutrients, vitamins, plant hormones and enzymes that are released during this process, and which in some cases are only present in the plant at this time.

Some practitioners of gemmotherapy (they are rarely referred to as gemmotherapists) furthermore believe that: . . .

. . .

. . . Gemmotherapy remedies have principally been used for organ drainage in France, generally prior to homeopathic treatment. . . .

. . In Italy, where homeopathy and related therapies adhere to the more classical tradition of the simplex (i.e. one remedy at a time), gemmotherapy remedies tend to be used in a different way.

Although they continue to have an important role as drainage remedies, they are frequently also used either symptomatically or systemically as an adjunct to homeopathy and other therapeutic approaches, or indeed as a sole treatment in their own right.

They are therefore as likely to be used in the treatment of sleeplessness or high blood pressure as for sinusitis or digestive problems. . . .

(What ILADS is) . . . WHY you need an ILADS-educated, Lyme Literate Doctor - starting with assessment / evaluation.

==============================

It's best to consult with an ILADS-educated LL doctor who has had 4 years of post-graduate medical education in the field of herbal and nutritional medicine -- and someone who is current with ILADS' research.

How to find an ILADS-educated LL:

N.D. (Naturopathic Doctor);

L.Ac. (Acupuncturist);

D.Ay. (Doctor of Ayurvedic Medicine);

D.O.M. (Doctor of Oriental Medicine);

Integrative / Holistic M.D., etc. (but be aware many in this category are not formally educated in herbal medicine other than a weekend lecture here and there)

Links to many articles and books by holistic-minded LL doctors of various degrees who all have this basic approach in common:

Understanding of the importance of addressing the infection(s) fully head-on with specific measures;

Knowing that support supplements are important, but NEVER enough alone. And knowing which supplements have direct impact, which are only support and which are both.

You can compare and contrast many approaches.

In the book 'Insights into Lyme Disease Treatment' by Connie Strasheim, Chapter 12 on Elizabeth Hesse-Sheehan has quite a lot about plant stem cell extracts [which is gemmotherapy, I believe]. Her website is:
