A doctor (LL) suggested that our daughter may show signs of Lyme because she swings in and out of troubling behaviors and symptoms.

She will be light and happy for 3 weeks or so, then have a bad week, where she is oppositional, hyper, and says she is full of Icky Goo" (great term! Hers not mine). Does this coincide with any Lyme or parasite cycles that anyone has witnessed?

Thank you!

Yes, lyme has a 4 week cycle. That means that about every 28 days it "flares" or makes the person feel worse. Symptoms of lyme during the flare are much more prominent and the person feels sicker during a flare.

Quotes from Burrascano about this:

At top of page 11: "Symptom flares every 4 wks."

Page 17:

"It has been observed that symptoms will flare in cycles every four weeks. It is thought that this reflects the organisms cell cycle, with the growth phase occurring once per month (intermittent growth is common in Borrelia species). As antibiotics will only kill bacteria during their growth phase, therapy is designed to bracket at least one whole generation cycle. This is why the minimum treatment duration should be at least four weeks.

If the antibiotics are working, over time these flares will lessen in severity and duration. The very occurrence of ongoing monthly cycles indicates that living organisms are still present and that antibiotics should be continued."

Page 26 "Classic Lyme Symptoms:

Slow response to treatment, with an initial symptom flare in most (Herxheimer-like reaction) then improvement over weeks, punctuated by the monthly symptom flares"

http://www.ilads.org/lyme_disease/B_guidelines_12_17_08.pdf

A flare lasting a week would be typical. I think mine didn't really show up until I started lyme treatment. Then, they lasted 3-4 days.

I marked the dates on the calendar that were the expected flares. I would write "Bad Day" so that I knew not to plan anything important on or around that day.

Lyme really, really affects mood, so that is most likely why you see such a big change in your child. The mood problems are really terrible.

Look at the symptom list on pages 9-10. Here are some of the mood/mental symptoms:

"Mood swings, irritability,
depression
Anxiety, panic attacks
Psychosis (hallucinations,
delusions, paranoia, bipolar)"

If you are not already taking her to a lyme specialist for children, do so as soon as possible.

No way! I am shocked. Wow, thank you. But ouch. This may be a tough road. But my former LLMD said that kids bounce back much faster than adults.

Yes our doctor is Lyme literate, so we are set, thank you!
