Fever, etc started Monday.
5 year old was seen by the Pediatrician yesterday (Tues) and told that this illness is viral (negative Strep test).
Today (Wed), his fever is still 102.7 when the ibuprofen wears off.
Both his Mom (my daughter) and I have chronic lyme and Co.
I do not want to seem paranoid, but...
He does spend alot of time at the soccer field and outside.
We have not seen any bites or rashes, but know that that does not mean anything.
I know that his Dr will not understand Lyme and will not know that testing is inaccurate.
What would you do that seems reasonable and that the Pediatrician will likely agree to?
Ask for a western blot, even if it's through LabCorp or Quest?? (UGH!) Knowing full well that they will say that they will only order an ELISA, if that, since there is no known history of a bite....you know how these Dr's are!
I think he should be seen by the Pediatrician again tomorrow if the fever and other symptoms are still present tomorrow.
Opinions please, about what to request, since our options through regular Dr's and labs are limited, not to mention their total lack of understanding.
He may have a viral illness, but it's always in the back of my head that it could be tick-borne infections.
(BTW, that's what happened to me 24 years ago..."it's viral".)

Well, if it actually is a virus, then elderberry extract may help.
According to the reviews, it is very highly regarded. Your local drugstore should have this.
I took elderberry whenever I began to get sick, and it was just remarkable how quickly I got better. I keep some on hand in case I get influenza again.

A Lyme test now wouldn't show anything if he is newly infected - it takes 3 weeks for the antibody count to be high enough to be detected on the test.
So immune stimulating things are the next logical thing to try.
Elderberry is excellent for viral illness, as is L-Lysine (free-form amino acid).
Garlic, hot lemon juice (hot (not boiled!) water poured over fresh squeezed lemon juice; add a touch of agave or stevia), avoidance of sugar, and zinc lozengers can be very good for bacterial issues.
I hope for his sake it is just viral

I think we all fear the possibility of tick borne infection because our lives have been so drastically changed by them.
Odds are your grandson has a virus. Believe it or not, spring is prime time for some viruses. Coxsackie is one of them. Can cause fevers, headaches, horrible sore throat....This is just one of the named and known viruses.
The general rule that I have been taught was that if the fever goes on longer than 3 days (or higher than 105) then you should take the child to the pediatrician. At that point they will want to do some further testing.
Tests ordered will be based on the physical exam and symptoms. They may want to order a CBC to help decipher if it is a bacterial or viral infection, maybe a chest x-ray or sinus films, lots of possibilities.
Of course you could also ask for Lyme tests to be added. Just don't limit the evaluation to tick borne diseases. There may be something else going on and you don't want to miss it.
Oh, one last thought. Go to a doctor that is in the child's community. If there is an infectious illness going around the schools and such the pediatricians will have seen other sick children and will recognize like symptoms. This can help with the diagnosis and get you the best treatment.

Thanks Carol, razzle and sammy.
I know that this little boy has taken Elderberry extract in the past, so I'll check to see if he's taking it now.
The entire family had H1N1 flu about 1 1/2 yrs ago. He was the only one who recovered in 3 days and he was the only one who took Elderbery extract. Everyone else was sick for 7+ days.
Makes sense, sammy, what you say.
I do know there is a good possibility that this is viral...I am close to this little one, so it is hard to see him feeling so sick and not getting better.
His pediatrician is in our community, so they will know what "bugs" are going around.
Thanks for all the input. I pray that he is better tomorrow.
sammy, I'm glad to see you here. Praying all went well and you are ok...?

I checked and he is not taking Elderberry because she did not have any.
I have some here, so she is coming over to get it tonight so she can give him some when he wakes up during the night.

He's been taking the Elderberry extract.
On Thursday, he was still running a fever, so he went back to the Dr and they still said it was viral.
On Friday morning he was feeling better and had a normal temp. In the afternoon it went up to 100.1, but that is nothing compared to what it was and that was without antipyretics for hours.
Friday afternoon he broke out with a rash.
When they described the rash to me, I knew he had Fifth's Disease.
He is doing much better today. Temp normal, playing, eating and drinking.
Thanks for asking Carol!!
