Looking to treat my child for RMSF. Currently being treated for lyme. Learned that doxy is really the only thing that works for it. All I know from the past year is that you aren't supposed to give children doxy because it will discolor teeth. Looking for others' experiences with RMSF and children.

Supposedly the effective doxy dose for RMSF is 100 mg twice daily for 10 days. Most literature says that it is better to go ahead and treat kids for the 10 days since RMSF is such a serious infection.

Another option that is used with pregnant ladies is rifampin. Think that would be ok for kids but not entirely sure.

And for hard to eradicate infections most docs combine doxy and rifampin for adults.

Thanks Bea,

I know the discussion was to treat with 30 days of doxy. This would be in addition to the other Lyme and co treatments we have going (will likely replace the main abx). I'll look into rifampin - it sounds like an interesting option.

How old is your child? Doxy can be given to kids 8 or older. Otherwise, what about minocycline? I don't know if that is effective for RSF or not, but it's in the same family as doxy, and is fairly similar (but different side-effects). (Oh, whoops, I see your child's age right in your title!).

If you do use doxy, watch out for sun sensitivity.

I'm sending a PM with an idea.

Bra, as it turns out on of the new scripts was for rifampin. Hopefully this will provide some level of treatment while I sort all of this out...
