Hello Everyone,

I am wondering if anyone knows whether you can take S. Boulardii/florastor if you have a PICC line?

I read that s.boulardii is very effective and can be taken at the same time as the ABX since it is a yeast and not bacteria.

If anyone has had success or knows whether you can take S.boulardii while having a PICC, please let me know.

Thank you.

I was told by my LLMD that you can take the Saccromyces with your abx because it is yeast. I have a port and use orals with the IV abx.

I take the saccroymces with my orals and do the IV right after in the AM.

Whether on orals or IV s. boularrdi is a must.

Hubby takes 6 capsules daily. Also takes reuteri and acidophilus.

I have read that it should not be taken when you have a line, but no one seems to know anything about it. I still take S. Boulardi and I have a central line.

You can take S.boulardii while you have a PICC line or any other kind of central line.

The only precaution is that you must wash your hands well after handling the probiotics. This actually applies to all probiotics.

S.boulardii use in the hospital is controversial because there are some studies that have linked it's use to a small number of central line infections.

This alarmed me so I searched out and read all the studies that I could find. In all of them there was some kind of contamination of the patient's central lines. Basically the nurse would check and flush the line after handling the probiotics, etc.

For me, I decided that the benefit outweighed the risk. I wash my hands after taking my probiotics. I always wash my hands before touching my port. I scrub my end caps with alcohol before flushing and attaching my antibiotics.

My doctor also recommended the S.boulardii specifically. I trust him and know that he would not prescribe something unsafe for me.

When I was scheduling for a small hernia operation the pre-op team was reviewing my long list of ABX and supps. They told me to stop my VSL#3, Floristor, Milk Thisle, Ginger Root, Omega 3, and Melatonin two week prior to surgery.

They apparrently all contribute to thinning the blood.

I too have a picc line since last xmas.

I had to postpone the hernia op to get tendons in two fingers repaired from a memorial day weekend encounter with a filet knife. I had very little time before hand surgery, but did stop the supps for one week to be safe. Sorry for digressing.

I saw my LLMD last night and shared the list with her. She did not agree with having to stop the probiotics for sugery, never mind due to a picc line.

I was also concerned with stopping the milk thisle but my labs done three days after surgery were fine.

my 2c. btw... picc is in left arm, cast is on right hand
