I just started taking Doxy and was so nauseated, I have stopped taking it. I had taken acidophiles for several days before, so I thought that would help. Any advice?

Be sure to take your Doxy with food and do not lie down for an hour or so after taking it.
You need to be on probiotics while taking abx.s so be sure to continue taking them - but a couple hours after your Doxy. Did you doctor tell you that?????
You can ask for Dorxy which is a the same as doxy but much more gentle on your gut - gets absorbed in the small intestines.
Did you doctor go over the basics with you in regards to your meds and how to take them???

No. No instructions about anything. Even about acidophilus. Thanks for input. I laid down after taking, Di maybe that's what did it. I'll ask for Dorxy.

Doryx, not dorxy.
The most common side effects of Doxycycline and Doryx Loss of appetite, nausea, sensitivity to sunlight, vomiting.
Some people here have gotten awful sunburns, even while in the car. Orange juice can make it worse.

Yes, the only way to successfully take doxy is to take it in the middle of a meal. That's what my lyme doctor instructed.
You eat half the meal, take the pill, and eat the other half of the meal.
You can't lay down right away after the pill because it could come up your throat and dissolve there instead of in your stomach. Your throat will be severely burned.
Also, you must totally avoid the sun while on this med. It will give you such a nasty burn that nasty isn't a good enough word for it.
You don't turn red, but you feel like your skin is being held over a flame. So, avoid even sun through car windows/windshield. And, absolutely no sunbathing whatsoever.
I got the burn on my hands and thought I would have to end up in the ER. Even narcotic pain medication would do nothing to get rid of this terrible pain.
Some advise people to wear gloves while driving to avoid the burn on the hands.
The insert with the medication should warn you about the sun and about lying down after you take the med. But, often it tells you not to take food with the med. As my lyme doctor said, that just isn't possible, as you have found.

Wow, no such instructions from our doc. And we are in Texas with 100 degree temps in the summer time.
I took the pill and shortly thereafter started to eat some cereal. SO sick, I got a migraine from the intensity of it. Had to take Phenergan, which knocked me out for the day. Still not feeling so well the day after. Can't take med if it does this to me. Very hesitant to try to take again.

Hi JBS:
I would recommend TF's post on how to take doxy and in addition to avoiding the sun (many times MD's prescribe amoxycycilin instead during the summer) you have to take probiotics (whole foods or a health food store).
You are killing good bacteria in your gut as well and if they are not replaced this can lead to a bad outcome and then you will have to stop the meds for a while.
A benefit of Doxy is it doesn't pass the liver many of the other drugs for lyme people have to watch liver toxic levels.

I had to drink ginger tea while on Doxy. I steeped about an inch of fresh ginger root for about ten minutes, then drank it before I ate and took the doxy. I think you also need to avoid dairy for 2 hours around the doxy (someone else who knows can chime in here).
Also, on the sun part - you can still be burned, even with sunscreen on. I had SPF 50 on my nose, and I still burned. It lasted for 2 weeks, and it felt like I had put a freezing cold hand into hot water.

Oooh, I am not eating so well right now. Just moved and have tons of boxes to unpack still. So wiped out, I'm just staring at the boxes at this point. I'm eating whatever I can put together with little effort. Haven't even made it to the grocery store other than to get milk and eggs.
Maybe I'll wait another week or two and try again when I'm more on top of things.
Thanks for the tips. No dairy sounds familiar to me - I've heard that somewhere, so I'm going to do that. Definitely passing on the no sun to my son as he lives outdoors in the summer. But I'm going to get my doctor to prescribe the Doryx at least and see if that and the changes in diet help.

I take doxy and immediatley eat a bananna or one or two hard boiled eggss and coffee. That keeps the nausea at bay. If I don't do that I will throw up, and I HATE throwing up!
