My DS is 15. He went to hockey camp last week for 5 days and came home on Friday. There were over 100 campers there plus staff. They all slept in one giant room. (wall-to-wall air mattresses - I saw the Facebook pictures)

He was fine when he left and was fine on Friday when we picked him up.

He started running a fever on Saturday. It was up over 101 that day and was a rollercoaster since, going down to almost normal and then spiking up higher. Today it got up to 103.6 at 3pm. His temp is normal right now at 9:30pm.

The only other symptoms he's had are a stiff neck which lasted about 15 minutes on Saturday (he said he just had it at a weird angle while watching TV) and today he said his feet were itchy and burning. That didn't last long either.

I took him in today when his fever spiked. The doc is thinking probably viral but is also treating him for possible tick-borne infection since we live in an endemic area. (The doctor doesn't think it's bacterial meningitis because he said it would have hit DS harder and faster than this has.)

DS was prescribed 10 days of doxy, 100mg, twice a day.

I'm impressed that the PCP wants to treat DS "just in case", but I know this isn't enough dosage or duration if Lyme is what's going on. I don't know if I should give him my doxy (I'm not taking it anymore but have 2 refills left on my large prescriptions), make an appointment for him with my LLMD or what. I hate to just "wait and see", but, OTOH, I'm not really sure this is Lyme.

I sent an e-mail out to his teammates' parents to see if anyone else is sick. (I think half his team was at the camp) I haven't heard back yet.

Any input is appreciated. Thanks.

Better safe than sorry, I always say. See how he feels after 10 days. Then decide if you should give him your doxy too.

How hard would it be to get him an appointment with your LLMD?

let's hope it's a virus!!!!!

My initial symptoms were high fever and stiff neck. It was the classic Babesia tick flu.

Fever that comes and goes is typical for Babesia. Also meningitis and intermittent symptoms in general.

I know you want to hope for the best, but don't be scared of overreacting. There is no such thing as overreacting to possible tick-borne infections. (The accusation/implication of overreaction is patronizing to patients and parents. Don't let that get to you.)

Do what you think you should do.

Good luck!

Thanks.

I'm not sure how long it will take to get him into my LLMD. I am probably going to email her to ask about this in general terms and see if she thinks a visit is necessary.

One other thing I forgot is that he has a prescription for Doryx from the dermotologist for acne. He hasn't been taking it regularly for the last couple of weeks between camp and vacation before that. He had just barely started it prior to vacation. I wonder if it would be sufficient for Lyme once the doxy is finished? It is just another form of the same drug.

Funny how open-ended treatment with abx is fine for acne but not for Lyme.

I'm not a doctor. Im not sure what guidelines are best to follow for a 15 year old. I would think he could handle an adult dosage, but you would certainly need to check with your LLMD.

I believe the recommended dosage for a new bite is Doxycycline 200 mg., 2x per day, for a minimum of 28 days. Up to 600 mg of Doxy can be used for an adult. Ive also seen recommendations for 6 weeks of therapy, rather than 4 weeks.

Since your son had symptoms of fever, stiff neck, and itchy feet, the LLMD may have more specific recommendations for him.

You can read what Dr. Burrascano says in his Treatment Guidelines: http://www.ilads.org/lyme_disease/B_guidelines_12_17_08.pdf

My recommendation is to hit it hard now, and get that LLMD appointment lined up.

Best wishes.
