Is it safe for those of us treating lyme to get a flu shot?

I get concerned that if I get sick this winter (stomach virus, flu, bronchitis) that I'll take a big slide back.

Is my immune system compromised from having lyme? My lifestyle and eating (minus the exercise) are more healthy now than ever.... but of course with the lyme, I often don't feel that way.

A flu shot was the straw that broke the camel's back for me. I know I'm not the only one here.

I WILL NOT DO IT MYSELF. NO WAY!!

I never get colds and I never get the flu. OK, I just jinxed myself!!! [bonk]

You could indeed lose ground if you get the shot....at least in my opinion. We go thru this discussion every year.

In some states you can't get exempt even on religious grounds. I think there are only 2 states like that.

I have a friend who works for the hospital's business office and even she was FORCED to get a shot or be fired. (that was likely IMPLIED)

I get very ill whenever I get vaccines. When your immune system is so overworked, adding an additional thing to fight off makes you feel the difference.

I just had this conversation with my LLNP. She actually said I should get the vaccine as it would be very taxing on my immune system if I got a bad case of the flu. She said to avoid any "live" vaccines, but the only live flu vaccine is the one given nasally which I would not be getting.

I asked this last year - you can search for the post. Last year, I was really sick, and I did not get a flu shot as my LLMD didn't think my immune system could handle it.

Miraculously, I somehow did not get the flu even when I was taking care of my daughter who got a bad case (and she did get the shot - go figure). But I did catch tons of colds, and they really set me back a lot each time.

I plan to ask again this year. I still certainly have Lyme and Co, but I'm much better off than this time last year so we'll see what they say.

If you don't get the shot, have other household members get it. It will provide a measure of protection. Also, wash, wash, wash those hands and avoid anyone sick like the plague! I was rather antisocial last winter. : (

My lyme doc told me to take the flu shot. I did. I didn't get sick from it at all.

So, ask your lyme doc. Write down your questions or you will forget them when you get in the office.

Larae30 do you live in Nebraska or does NE stand for New England? I live in Elkhorn (omaha) and haven't met anyone else here who has lyme.

"just don" is in NE!! look above at the directory and type in his name. Very good friend of mine.

Go here:

http://flash.lymenet.org/scripts/ultimatebb.cgi/ubb/directory

You can also go back to it after sending him a PM and look for the "keyword".. you can click on "location" to find others from Nebraska.

It will be hard to know if they are currently on the board though.

Ahhh, sounds like quite the debate....one risk vs. another.

I've had the flu shot before with no ill effects, but that was before my lyme came back and was dx. I'll be interested to see what my LLMD says.

All of my children and husband get it.... the thimerasol-free single dose. Keeping ALL of us healthy is my goal. My daughter had severe anxiety, OCD, and panic attacks due to a phobia of vomiting after a bad flu a couple of yrs ago. It took a lot of therapy to get her back to life. I could never put her through that again.

Soooo... I'm just trying to make the best decisions I can.

I just asked my LLMD the same thing today at my visit. I have gotten the flu shot for the past at least five years never had a problem with it, I work in health care, but my doc just told me today NOT to get it.

He agrees he also thinks it makes your immune system overwork unnecessarily. He said the flu is not going to kill you, I replied that if I got the flu I will be near death as I feel I am already, he still said he recommends not to get it.

This actually came about because I got my first ivig shot today, and I read that you don't need a flu shot getting these injections, again he said even if you weren't getting the ivig's you still should not get it.

This is just what my doc said.

doc also says they fail to even come close to the current strain of flu, that's why it's useless.

He said if you insist on getting it, to try to get it in at least two divided doses.

I had a flu shot 2 years ago and within hours I was sick with chills...high fever...entire body muscle aches. This lasted a full 24 hours..I actually had the shot a work and became sick even before my shift was over.

I work in a pharmacy and all employees are able to get them free so I relented against my better judgement and had one. I will never have another...

Never did one. NEVER WILL!!

The adjuncts are sheer poison! And a recent Scandanavian study showed that the more Flu Shots you received, the higher your chances of developing Alzheimers/Dementia in old age!!

Why? Because the Aluminum adjunct (they use to "boost" the effect of the immune response) is a BRAIN POISON!

Thanks but no thanks.

In my state, kids have to get 24 shots - INCLUDING THE FLU SHOT - to enter Kindergarten - but you can send your child to a Christian School and they will leave you alone!

BTW, New Jersey is the headquarters for this country's Pharmaceutical industry ... which is a good reason why our legislators take pharma campaign money, and turn them into vaccination EDICTS!

IMHO you are better off taking LOTS of Vitamin C and probiotics, and even Cod Liver Oil, to strengthen your immune system.

Agreed! And New Jersey has one of the nation's HIGHEST Autism rates! Coincidence? No matter how hard the "scientific community" tries to tell us there is no correlation, you won't convince me!

One of my very dear friends SWEARS that her second son became autistic because of the Measles/Mumps/Rubella shot! I know this family very well ... and can testify that this baby was perfect up until about 18 mos., when he got this vaccination.

His mother said he screamed for several days, and ran a fever - then a few months later, we realized that he had stopped THRIVING! He became underweight, didn't make eye contact with you anymore. He seemed to lose interest in watching other people in the room.

At age 11 now, he barely talks! (Although he is capable of short sentences at times.) Save if he is playing in his own little world, and "jibber jabbering" to himself.

The STRANGEST THING is, this kid READS AND WRITES BEAUTIFULLY! Spells dinosaur names to perfection in a chiseled printed hand! He gets excellent marks in school, just based on his paperwork, and has been "mainstreamed" to public grammar school with the help of a student aid. He seems to understand anything that is said to him, but is always too "tongue tied" to respond, or simply prefers to ignore us.

When this couple had another child, they refused to allow him even a single shot ... and at 2 yrs, you'd swear this one is a genius. They credit their religious exemption.
