What is the best way to improve your immune system? I feel as thpough my weakened immune sytem caused me to become so ill with lyme so I'm hopeful that if I can improve my immune system along with my lyme treatment that I will be in good shape?? Hoping anyway [Smile]

I can think of many ways to improve it--healthy diet & exercise (Burrascano's guidelines-16th version), lots of rest, meditation, a little sun, acupuncture, vitamin C, salt, green tea, avoid toxins, remove them if you can, and address parasites. :)

Many things can weaken the immune system and Lyme and it's coinfections are the worst offenders. So getting rid of the infections that caused the weakened immune system to begin with is number one. In addition, strengthening the immune system, for me, entailed many things. I used garlic both for treatment of coinfections/Lyme and for strengthening my immune system. I also used IV vitamin infusions (Myers Cocktail), B12 injections, and HCL infusions. My white blood cell count was very low so the HCL infusions were done to raise my WBCs and were effective. As for exercise, it's essential but should be done gradually and avoid anaerobic states because that will feed the infection. Things like walking, biking, yoga are good. Until I treated my coinfections correctly (Dr. S's protocols saved my life) I never really made it over the hump from REALLY bad to REALLY living! I wish you the best!

Jen: fascinating information about HCL infusions. I am going to have to read more on that.

Right now my LLMD are discussing IV. I have alot of gastrointestinal issues and she thinks the oral medications are not helping.

I also think I may have some absorption issues so who knows if the orals are even being absorbed.

Thanks for posting.

What did it for me was 1 continuous hour of weight lifting every other day, as recommended by Burrascano.

I give that the credit for me being able to get rid of lyme. It has now been over 7 years since I completed my treatment.

Here is a quote from page 31:

"It is a fact that a properly executed exercise program can actually go beyond the antibiotics in helping to clear the symptoms and to maintain a remission....

In addition, there is now evidence that a carefully structured exercise program may benefit T-cell function: this function will depress for 12 to 24+ hours after exercise, but then rebound. This T-cell depression is more pronounced after aerobics which is why aerobics are not allowed.

The goal is to exercise intermittently, with exercise days separated by days of total rest, including an effort to have plenty of quality sleep. The trick is to time the exercise days to take advantage of these rebounds. For an example, begin with an exercise day followed by 3 to 5 rest days; as stamina improves, then fewer rest days will be needed in between workouts. However, because T-cell functions do fall for at least one day after aggressive exercises, be sure to never exercise two days in a row."

http://www.ilads.org/lyme_disease/B_guidelines_12_17_08.pdf

Your T cells fight infection.

Page 32 describes the required exercise program as follows:

"a whole-body exercise program, consisting of light calisthenics and/or resistance training, using light resistance and many repetitions. This can be accomplished in exercise classes called "stretch and tone", or "body sculpture", or can be achieved in the gym with exercise machines or carefully with free weights."

If your white blood cell count is low (white blood cells fight infection) you can take Transfer Factor to raise it up. That is what my lyme doctor gave me and it worked within 2 weeks.

The one I took is made of bovine (cow's) colostrum. The brand was 4Life.

chaga mushrooms ! , also lots of green and color in your diet - you can buy "green drinks " in the produce dept that really boost immune sytem ( they help my daughter lots ) and drink a little of them every day .

Diet is key ! Also , liver support to boost glutathione which is the body's main weapon with infection. I take now brand liver detox and regenerator , or liv 52 . These protect liver and really boost the detox system and glutathione.
