PLZ help if you have any known info re: toxicology of japanese knotweed (polygonum caspidatum) and dogs.

dogs weigh abt 6 pounds, the other is abt 10 pounds and consumed abt 1/8 pound of ground knotweed root. They got hold of it within the last 3 hrs while I was not home. Can not tell if both dogs or only one dog ate it.

at the moment there are no visible side effects: no lethergy, no vomiting, nothing out of the ordinary.

Knotweed was puchased in bulk, ground, and not mixed with anything else.

unfortunately, dog gate was not secured this a.m. and they got into my bedroom where my herbs are kept. All of them, except this one are in canning jars. The knotweed was still in a foil pouch/bag as it was just purchased.

I have called vet who told me to call poison control center. called poison control and they had limited information...said it may cause diarrhea, vomiting, in humans but unsure of toxicolgy as it related to dogs.

PLZ HELP if you have any information or insight.

Thank you

Is this a plant that dogs should avoid? If not, I'd not worry about it.

1/8 of a pound of dried plant. Is that about 1/4 cup dry measure? For a tiny dog, though, more than a "dose" for sure.

Since the two places I would have first suggested did not offer a clear answer, call the manufacturer of the product directly.

With just a basic search [herb name, dogs],

it seems that this might be just fine. I cannot confirm the reliability of the source below but it seems that at least one product such as what they consumed is being made for dogs.

Resveratrol For Dogs

From some reader posts:

. . . grapes are poisonous to dogs . . .

. . . Grapes are not the source of the resveratrol used in Resvantage Canine. The resvaratrol comes from Giant Knotweed (Latin Name: Polygonum Cuspidatum) . . .

You may be able to find your answer at a professional website for dogs. For a start, maybe search to find certified vets/herbalists this way:

dog, herbalist

Keebler-

thank you for your response.

yes, it is abt 1/4 cup...much more than a standard dose for dogs.

I have been able to get in touch with a friend who is a long time herbalist. He states that the dogs should not have a problem. He specifically said the dogs would be free of parasites now. though it may well give them diarrhea.

looks like a long day of pooper scooping in the back yard [Smile]
