I was wondering how salt-c would work as a way to stay stable with Lyme and Bart while I find a new LLMD.
My latest LLMD has gotten me about 60% better in the last 2 years, but now liver enzymes are keeping him from trying me on anymore abx indefinately because he doesn't know how to handle anything besides the abx he most recently had me on I guess and has no more ideas on how to get the enzymes down. I am already doing alot including daily saunas.
The thing is that I relapsed badly after 3 1/2 months off abx after liver enzymes went up. I went back on abx and in 4 weeks herxed like crazy and felt so much better rather quickly this time and then a few weeks ago, liver enzymes were high and in the middle of another herx my dr. took me right off the abx's that I know would have gotten me well had I been on them longer and he even was going to add others down the road. Now he has no plans at all and I do not want to lose all the ground I've made over 2 years. I am even thinking about ordering abx on line, but have no idea which one's or one would be safer for my liver.
I guess I am looking for some guidance in the direction of self treating because and abx, salt-c because I have gotten so much of my life back and am all alone now due to this horrible disease and I have not one person anymore to help me if I become bedridden again nor do I want to.
Any ideas please. I know it wouldn't take long to get well because now I herx hard and feel better very quickly, making bigger strides when I relapse and go back on abx.
Thank you.

Could you possibly afford to go to a naturopathic doctor? They usually can do things a little more gently.

My llmd was one. I did do herbs and they really didn't make a difference like abx and they too raised the liver enzymes and had to go off them as well each time. Thanks for your advice. My dr. did get me pretty far, yes, but he is stuck now and doesn't really know how to proceed with me. It's scary. Thank you.

LIVER & KIDNEY SUPPORT & and several HERXHEIMER support links, too.
------------------------
When considering herbal / nutritional / adjunct methods:
if at all possible - because each person & each case is different - it's best to consult with an ILADS-educated LL (lyme literate) doctor who has completed four years of post-graduate medical education in the field of herbal and nutritional medicine -
- and someone who is current with ILADS' research & presentations, past and present.
Many LL NDs incorporate antibiotics (depending upon the licensing laws in their state). Some LLMDs and LL NDs have good working relationships.
When possible, it's great to have both a LLMD and LL ND and even better when they have a long-standing professional relationship.
Integrative / Holistic M.D., etc. (Be aware that those in this category can have various levels of formal herbal &/or nutritional education, perhaps even just a short course. Do ask first.)
Links to many articles and books by holistic-minded LL doctors of various degrees who all have this basic approach in common:
Understanding of the importance of addressing the infection(s) fully head-on with specific measures from all corners of medicine;
knowing which supplements have direct impact, which are only support and which are both.
You can compare and contrast many approaches.

After 4 yrs of abx incl 6 mos of IV rocephin, and still very sick, antiparasitic herbs and salt/c saved my life. Check out the info at the lymestrategies salt/c group.
Also consider adding antiparasitic herbs such as Parastroy to the protocol. When doing salt/c it is important to start slow and ramp up slowly as well.
I started with 1/4tsp each salt and 1/4tsp c per day and ramped up 1/4 tsp at a time according to how I was herxing.

I think Lyme disease itself can cause elevated liver enzymes. I have had this off and on in the past but not for a long time now.
Have you ever taken Milk Thistle for this? It can be very beneficial as long as you are not taking Mepron.

Thanks all. I have been taken Milk Thistle, NAC, and a liver supplement packed with all kinds of herbs, etc. for the liver. I also do the saunas daily.
I do believe it is the infections because I always am feeling better and a herx just before they go up. I just can't believe the dr. cannot see this. I need to move on and in the mean time find a way to get some Ceftin because this one really helps me stay on track. I have also never had the opportunity to try more than 5 or so abx. There are so many that could get me well and so many combos I hear about on here that my dr. never tried. I am so discouraged and worried.

Catttail,
I have had the same problem. You are the first other person that I've seen that also feels BETTER when their liver enzymes are up.
I get so frustrated because I finally think I'm improving and them right away my ALT/AST/Bilirubin go up and my LLMD pulls all meds.
Have you tried glutathione IV's? For me, that helps keep my liver somewhat close to normal. ALT/AST are about 2-3 times normal at their highest while on glutathione.
I have also used herbal liver detox teas from the regular grocery store and ALA, NAC with success. Milk thistle raises mine up for some reason.

Wow, you ARE in the same boat as me. I'm not alone after all, lol.
It's funny, my LLMD mentioned the Glutathione, but now does not discuss it. Just wants to forget things it seems. Is any form of Glutathione covered by insurance?
My LLMD is freaking out each time my enzymes are at all out of normal range, the highest mine ever got were AST - 63 and ALT - 156. I wish he could at least try me on a different abx or abxs.
It's funny, I have been taking milk thistle forever and maybe I should stop seeing it's not doing much of anything to help me.
I am taking Dandelion tea each day, lemon water, saunas, NAC, and a very expensive liver supplement with milk thistle in that. I think I will omit the mixed supplement and try adding the ALA since I have never tried that. Could you please tell me a good brand of ALA that I could get?
Thank You.
