I brought my dog to the vet today as she was acting strangely. Cried out in pain when attempting to run, wouldn't eat much etc
They did testing and it showed she was positive for lyme and erlichia. The vet put her on doxy 400mg/day for 28 days.
We are hoping this is what is troubling her, but there is also the chance that she has lyme, but something else is going on as well.
We are both now on the same med. I have to say for me doxy has been wonderful so far. Hopefully she will make a quick turn around. He said we should see an imrovement in 48-72 hrs.
Update: She has now had about 7 doses of doxy and there really is not much improvement Her vet called in some pain med for her yesterday which seemed to help some. I'm really worried as I'm not sure what to do next if she doesn't respond.
Her symptoms are so strange and so different. It's hard to even tell what part of her body is in pain. She has also developed strange fears. She is petrified to go in the backyard. She has always been on a leash so there is no possibility of anything happening to her out there that we did not know about.
How long does it usually take for improvement from erlichia?

I think they are definitely more accurate. They tested her right in the office while we waited. If you suspect lyme I would get her tested.

Sorry Ellen. One of my dogs had what we think was Lyme 5 years ago, he was just one year old. They never did get a test result, so you are lucky. But it was scary, on a Tuesday he had a fever, many emergency rooms and vets later on Friday he was lame. Luckily, my vet put him immediately on doxy without a positive test... I think a herx is what made him lame... But $3500 dollars later, for MRI, spinal tap, etc, we still had no answers but we were sent home with more doxy, antirobe (for protozoan) and pednisne if those didn't work... Luckily they did...
I hope your girl feels better. Glad the doxy is good for you too. It has good anti-inflammatory properties.

Our 2 dogs both have Erlichia and one has Lyme.
They have a second blood test that gives a load by a number of Lyme. I asked the vet if he could test me for that as well sort of in jest.
Why do they have good accurate tests for dogs and not people is a puzzle to me.
The one that had both, delivered 10 puppies and 5 died and we wonder if Lyme and Erlichia played into it.
Dang ticks!

What is amazing is my dog got a higher dose of doxy than I did when I first started showing symptoms! I should have gone to my bet instead of my PCP!
