I was diagnosed with Lyme and Bartonella in August. Later a test for Babesia showed my number at 20, which the doc says is right on the border, so he said we will keep that in mind as we treat. Started seeing Dr. S in MD in September, and am on 3x Doxy, 1 Azitrhomiacin, and recently added 2x Ceflex (Keflex).
I started on the Ceflex and the next day started getting lower back pain. I'm not sure if it could be constipation causing the pain, but I'm feeling it on the lower right side. Went to my PCP and he ordered a CT scan and Ultrasound to rule out both kidney and gall stones. All tests, including urinalysis came back normal/negative.
My question is, has anyone else experienced the lower back pain? If so, have you determined if it's related to the infection, or if it could be related to the meds? In addition my right arm feels like I've been abused. It hurts in the muscle near the shoulder, and also around the elbow. Now it seems like the left arm is trying to mimic the pains of the right arm. In just one day of taking Ceflex the arm started to feel better, but my doc recommended coming off of the meds until I found out what was causing the back pains. After telling him all the tests were normal he said "if my pain has gone away go back on the meds slowly (doxy first, then ceflex, etc).
Part of me is concerned that the pain won't go away, and with this being a holiday weekend I don't know what to do. I've been taking Miralax to see if that helps, but so far it's not working. Hopefully it's just constipation.
I also take the following suppliments daily: vitamin, DHC/Omega suppliment, Vit-D, Biotin, Garlic, and Probiotic.
Any input would be greatly appreciated! I am also wondering what else I can do to boost my immune system. I am so afraid of wrecking my immune system with all of these antibiotics.
Thanks so much, and Happy Thanksgiving!

Make sure you rule out a troubled appendix. If you have only a very low temp, around 99, get checked. And pain in the upper regions can also be part of this. My husband had chest/rib pain while his appendix was about to burst, and it did just as I convinced the ER guys to check it. He was saved.
You should not stay constipated. That is a real no-no, especially on meds like this. Take whatever works for you or ask your doctor. Avoiding reabsorption of toxins because of being constipated is the first thing that will help your immune system.
Best to you -

Thanks GiGi. I had the appendix checked just a few weeks ago because I was having pain in the front lower right abdomen. They think it's a cyst on my right ovary. I'm working on resolving the constipation. I will keep trying things until it's resolved. Thanks for the advice!

I frequently have lower back pain that radiates to the front lower quadrants. There are nerves as well as muscle that run from the front to the back and vice versa.
When I have compalined of the pain my LLNP thought it was definitely related to lyme. I did notice certain meds, esp mino and rifampin increased the pains. Stopping my meds for several days has made the pain stop.
The constipation though could really be aggravating things for you. That in itself can give you horrible pains. I went through this with one of my kids yrs ago. They actually thought it was appendix and it was constipation.
I find for myself I need a good cup of coffee every morning to keep myslef regular. I know no caffeine, but my LLNP said one cup was perfectly fine.

Ellen101, thank you...I had stopped drinking coffee, and it was helping me stay regular, so maybe I should go back to it and make sure it's only one cup a day.
Now if I could get the pain in my arm to subside! Maybe when I start back on the 2nd med it will!

I used to get ovarian cysts....very painful!
When I stopped eating gluten (wheat, rye, barley, and sometimes oats...oats are heavily cross-contaminated with wheat/gluten unless the oats are certified gluten-free), the ovarian cysts stopped happening for me.
Apparently, in my case, gluten really messes up my hormone levels and that triggers the cysts (and other painful symptoms).
