I attempted to take Mepron at 1/4 of the daily dose to start with. I did 1/2 teaspoon each day and had to stop because it cause horrible itchy skin starting in my armpits (of all places) and spreading up my arms, down my sides, and across the side of my breat. On both sides. I ended up with raw skin and lots of little bruises from scratching. I even tried it again about a week later thinking I might be able to tolerate it, but no such luck as it was too bad.
And then I had an allergic reaction to Azithromycin. So this combination is out.
What other drug combinations are there for treating Babesia? I see my LLNP in January to talk about it, but wanted to ask ahead of time.

I've been on Biaxin before... didn't seem to do much, but that was through a different LLND. I'm on a different combination of drugs now, so it's possible it might be more effective.
I'm sad that I wasn't able to stick with these two meds. Even though I was on them briefly, it seemed there was a slight wane in symptoms. Luckily the Mepron wasn't as expensive as I had feared it to be considering I can't take it.
I wonder if she'll try to talk me into trying the Mepron again. I hope not. It's good to know there are alternatives, though. Fingers are crossed that we'll find a good fit.
Thanks, Lymetoo!

Not sure if this applies to you but for those taking mepron, you will need to carefully monitor liver enzymes. One of the symptoms of elevated enzymes is itching of the skin. Others include yellowing of the skin and eyelids as well as tender abdomen and dark urine.

I had the same thing with Mepron , Total body itching !
Then a short time later I had the same thing with Penicillin. I did go to an allergist and was neg. for Penicillin but he did not rule out allergy; He wanted more testing which I never went for.
I never used these again.

After that second attempt I just stopped using the Mepron. I had called the office and the assistant said to stop taking it and to talk to the doctor at my next appointment coming up in January, so I'll talk to her again then.
I was just wondering what the other options are so that I can go in prepared. I have great anxiety over situations where I can't be overly prepared. That's probably the Bart rearing its ugly head :-)
