So for the last 5 years I have had this problem off and on..only I didn't realize what it was until tonight!

I first thought it was some sort of seizure activity because it only seemed to happen when I was waking up (but now realize it is just what was waking me up).

It feels like dunking your head under water over and over... pressure and a strange popping of the ear drum. I can feel it move in there. It happens in both ears. It's almost like going deaf for a second, then another... then another.

I finally found on a forum someone with the same problem and an ENT says it is myoclonus of the eardrum..often a symptom of MS.

I've worried for a long time over this... seizures? Blood pressure issue? But it's twitching!

Does anyone have this symptom???? Am I the only one??? I can go weeks or months without it happening...but lately it's all through the day and night and much more frequent.
It's driving me insane!

Yes, I've had this on and off. It can be very unsettling.

It's likely (key word, so do talk to our LLMD) nothing to worry about (in that it's explanable) and there are things that can help.

Muscle spasms: Magnesium helps. Take 3 x a day, never all at once. Up to 2,000 mg a day. Balance with Calcium and other minerals. Peter Gilham's CALM.

Inflammation: Magnesium; antioxidants; yawnning; gentle humming; avoid gluten, dairy, corn, soy and food additives. Drink water. Warm water may help loosen the muscle tightness. Gentle massage around the ears, jaw, neck - gentle.

Alignment of the neck, jaw bones, or blocked eustachian tubes: same things listed above help and cranial-sacral therapy. Search: UPLEDGER to find someone trained in this very gentle but effective approach. NEVER have anyone suddenly twist neck. EVER. Not good with lyme.

Posture: Google FENDENKRAIS TECHIQUE & also Peggy Cappy (Yoga for the Rest of us). Assess your posture during the day and at night.

Avoid all scents. These can cause inflammation in the ears.

Hope this improvess soon.

If there are weather changes (pressure, winds), this can be more prominent.

Concern: " . . . myoclonus of the eardrum..often a symptom of MS." (end quote)

Q: seizures?

"Myoclonus" is the action of muscles spasming. At a certain point, muscles spasms (when muscles seize) it may be called a seizure but that usually involves more of the body.

Yes, all kinds of myoclonus can go with "MS" but "MS" is very often lyme. And myoclonus is common with lyme.

In larger fashion, it can be triggered in the brain and affect the body. It can also be isolated sort of just within a certain muscle area (even with the ear).

It can involve nerves signally too fast, too, and that can be part of what happens with "myoclonus of the ears" - the nerve signals go haywire and the muscles jump.

But myoclonus can be caused by magnesium &/or taurine deficiency.

Aspartame, MSG and similar excitotoxins can also trigger it. Be sure to avoid all food additives and all processed food.

MAGNESIUM is the very best treatment for myoclonus. My bet, though, is that there are only about two neurologists in the country who will let you know that as they'd rather use knock out drugs (which often can damage the liver).

Those with lyme are often severely deficient in magnesium and taurine. With the toxicity, inflammation gets worse and magnesium is even more important.

Taurine as well is very important and works well with magnesium. Especially if you are low on fish, animal protein or eggs.

Lithium Orotate, low dose may help, too.

Liver support is also very important for the ears.

I've had ear twitching too, it's a weird feeling, sometimes the twitching is really fast and sometimes it's like a big squeeze and then lets go.
