Hi all,
My 10 yr old who has congenital Lyme and has been off abx for 4 months is now being hammered by tree pollen. We have this every year-the only antihistamine she has been able to tolerate is a compounded one called Ketotifen. We keep her inside, shower everyday, and lower any other allergens during the months of Feb-June. It's out of control right now. Any tips for lyme friendly decongestants, throat soothers, etc. We have olive leaf spray for throat but not cutting it. Also using humidifier as she is totally mouth breathing. Concerned it will go to asthma which she has a history of or out of control systemic reaction and risk the need of steroids which I would only give her if life threatening breathing issues arise. Help!

Healing thoughts to you,

L.

If you can get her to use the "Neil Med Sinus Rinse" that would help to cleanse her nasal passages and sooth.

Saline sinus rinses are excellent.

A HEPA air filter unit in her bedroom is also helpful.

Slippery Elm lozengers by Thayer are good for soothing sore/irritated throats.

Does Quercetin help her? It is a natural anti-inflammatory/anti-histamine.

If she has any food allergies but is still eating those foods, that will make environmental allergies more likely to cause symptoms.

I use Fenugreek as a natural decongestant...it thins mucus secretions, and also has mucillagenous properties, so would also soothe an irritated throat.

Mold exposure in the home or in foods (fermented foods like cheese, vinegar, etc.) may increase allergy symptoms also.

When we had mold in our house, I was having more and more trouble with environmental allergies. Since getting rid of the mold, my antihistamine need has decreased noticeably...

Thank you Razzle and girl.

She does have numerous food allergies but we are militant about avoiding those. Yes, on HEPA filer in her room already. Ruled out mold in the home. Have Quercitin in our cabinet but totally forgot about it. Will try that and other suggestions. Just back from pedi to r/o strep as her throat is so sore she has been refusing food and whispering vs talking. An, no we don't mention Lyme to our pedi especially the weekend on call ones. Just wanted to know if it was something more than allergies and the sore throat that comes with Lyme.

Thank you so much. Myself and my son are in Bart flares so my brain is "fried" and I really cannot think. Knew you guys would be able to help. Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That Neil Med sinus rinse is better and easier to use than a Neti, imo. You can buy one bottle of it from Walmart, prefilled for about $7, that comes with several little packages of the salt/baking soda mix to add in, for future rinses. But if you want to use it numerous times, you'll need to buy a separate box of just the salt packages, which is about another $7. I clean the sinus rinse bottle before and after each use, but she can probably use it 2 x day, or at least once a day.

If you can get her to make the sound "ah ah ah ah ah ah ah" while she's using it (sounds silly I know) then that will help her breath out her mouth while she's doing is, making it easier. Otherwise, just follow the directions on the box. I think the sinus rinse is easy to do. I used to use it on my two year old. She didn't really like it, but hey...

It also helps get congestion out if you'll "sniff" the water through your sinuses after you squeeze the fluid into the nostril and then you can spit it out your mouth. Gross, I know, but it has saved me before when I've had mucus congestion up there and helps to get it out so it doesn't become infected. It also helps to flush out viruses that are trying to "take residence" in the nose, if there's someone else sick in the house and you've been exposed.

I'm pretty diligent about throwing these bottles away and purchasing new ones after a certain amount of time.

Anyway, here's a link, if you're interested, so you'll know what I'm talking about. If she's got post nasal drip, that could certainly cause a sore throat.

Here's another idea I would do if I had a sore throat. It seems counterintuitive, but I bet it would help!

It's using Apple Cider Vinegar.
