After four and a half years of amoxicillin ( 1 gram 3 times a day) the doctor I had been seeing was no longer allowed to treat Lyme by those who oversaw the clinic where he practiced.

During this time I saw initial improvement. Most notable my irregular heartbeat which had been present for 20 plus years disappeared.

In retrospect I would say I was stable during this period.

When I found out I was losing him as a doctor I started taking half my amox dose in order to stretch the prescription until I found someone new.

From Dec 2011 until July 2012 I was at half dose. Then July, August, September I was off amox altogether. During this period I experienced new symptoms. I became weaker (as measured by my workouts) and started to experience muscle twitching in my shoulders and upper arms.

I found a new doctor and went back on amox in October. My expectation was that these new symptoms would soon reverse.

But after 6 months that hasn't happened. In fact I've continued to get weaker and the muscle twitching continues.

The loss of strength is profound. I had lost a little strength while I was at a deduced amount of amoxicillin but now that I am back on it I have lost much more. The only good thing about it is that is is quantifiable. So many symptoms are hard for me to compare - Is my brain fog worse now than a year ago? Not sure but I will know if it is gone for more than a week.

But the loss of ability during my workout is easy to measure. It also seems loss of strength and muscle twitching should be related.

(These are not my only symptoms)

I have been using Natural Vitality Magnesium but it has not helped the twitching.

Is it possible my infection developed a resistance to amox because of the half dose? My original doc said borrelia doesn't readily develop resitance since it reproduces slowly.

Or am I possibly suffering the consequences of being on a large dose of amox for so long?

Are there vitamin/mineral deficiencies that can result from being on amox for a long time?

Any other thoughts?

Thank you for your time and I wish improving health to all

That's ALL you have taken for Lyme in all these years?? Oh my. No wonder you are still ill!! Have you been checked for coinfections? Most with chronic lyme have coinfections and those need different meds.

One thing I'll point out is that yeast/candida can rob you of vitamins and minerals. It can get really bad and that would be more likely to happen after being on long term abx.

I agree! ONLY amox will not get you better. Is your new doc a LLMD? If not, write on the Seeking Doctor section for a list in your area.

Hope you are able to start a good regimen soon.

Take care,

Thank you Lymetutu and Laxlover.

With my first doc I did many rounds of flagyl and 5 months of zithro when it seemed the amox flagyl routine had stalled. The zithro eventually gave me diarrhea so I stopped. The diarrhea was definitely from the zithro and not C diff. I would take a zithro and have almost immediate diarrhea and the diarrhea stopped promptly when I quit the zithro.

The new doc is ILADS but I am not sure what direction he is taking me. I am simply on the amox protocol from my first doc. This was partly my idea since I thought it would get me back to where I was before going of amox. Hopefully he has something else to offer when I see him next.

Check into parasite tx now considered the number one co-infection of Lyme. Oftem misdiagnosed and untreated even by the best LLMDs. Google parasite symptoms.

Oh yes, zith can do that!!!

I would ask him to test you for coinfections.. realizing that the tests COULD come back falsely negative.

Please carefully review this thread:
