due to recent amendments to the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act), most chronic illnesses are now covered under the Act as a disability, meaning that employers would have to make reasonable accommodations. there is much disagreement of course over what is reasonable.

I also had to file for FMLA when I was at my sickest. Thankfully, the people that I worked for were fairly accommodating. I think that only companies of certain sizes are required to offer FMLA, though.
Regardless of what's legal, I've worked for kind, understanding people, and I've worked for jerks. Try to not work for jerks.

I'm actually going through all of this right now; very intimidating to say the least. I work for the fed and just recently filed for reasonable accomodation. I've exhausted almost all of my leave so I'm trying to figure things out. I've been sick for 15 years and always worked; I've just never been as sick as the last few months. Hopefully management will be able to help me so I don't lose my job. Good luck; I know thinking about losing your job is beyond stressful, especially when you're sick.

I held on as long as I could. Was laid-off. Mass lay-off. I was hitting bottom at the time, and couldn't have stayed with the employer, anyway.
Then worked for a few years as substitute teacher and only asked to work on days that I felt better. (That was before the substitute teaching was outsourced to the ocorporation "Kelly Services".)
I felt I couldn't meet Kelly's demands, so filed for SSDI.
I wasn't gainfully employed as a substitute teacher, anyway. Just didn't want to face going through SSDI.
Your friend may need to do that, but hopefully will get better soon.

Another thing you can do is set up a conference call meeting with human resources, your doctor and yourself. The doctor can write (and verbally say) what you need to be accommodated (including breaks, lifting objects, air filters, whatever....).
I think I doctor's note will help, especially if you wind up needing to take legal action.
