Inhaling DE can cause fluid on the lungs. Which in turn can cause your lungs to not absorb oxygen, which could cause, uhm, death.
If you drop any and a cloud of DE wafts up, leave the room until it settles before clean up. I would think if you were to vacuum, wetting it down would be a good idea so it doesn't kick up more dust.

There's a warning posted on every container of diatomaceous earth (DE) NOT TO BREATHE IT!!!
Its action with bugs and intestinal parasites is for its tiny sharp edges to shred them.
Do you really want this in your lungs??
What would go first----you or the lungworm?
That's not a contest I'd like to be in.
