I finished a round of flagyl and keflex. Told them I couldnt take cipro and they changed it.

I took five kinds of probiotics including florastor and critical care. Ive got plenty left.

Im not on abx right now so how long should I continue these?

Do you have to do probiotics if youre doing say buhner or cowden?!

Yes, even when taking herbal antimicrobials (and many herbs have some degree of antimicrobial action), probiotics and prebiotics are essential.

Even when not taking anything that is considered antimicrobial:

How long should one include probiotics in their diet?

Every day of their life.

Several times a day

. . . for anyone with any kind if GI condition - or anyone concerned with keeping a health gut (everyone, really, isn't it?).

This can be with particular supplements that have been researched to be top quality &/or as certain probiotic and prebiotic foods. This kind of food is vital every single day for every person. Probably for pets, too.

The exact kinds may vary depending upon individual needs and rotation can be of benefit.

Naturopathic doctors are better versed in the various kinds of probiotic and prebiotic supplements and the better quality brands -- and also about what foods contain these vital substances. With careful thought, this can be done solely with certain good foods.

Although more MDs are becoming somewhat educated about this, not all are.

I would take probiotics honestly....for the rest of your life

Thats what I plan to do. Granted when I finish treatment I will not take as many of them, but I still will.

Another thing I have found very helpful with increasing probiotics in the gut is taking chlorella. It makes your lactobacillis in your intestines multiply by at least 4 times.

I find that I can tolerate antibiotics more since adding chlorella into my regimen along with antibiotics.

When I'm not on antibiotics I take about 1/2 the probiotic dose that I would usually take when I'm on antibiotics.

I just do better when I take probiotics even when I'm not on antibiotics.

You should take them for at least one month after stopping antibiotics, per my lyme doctor. This is necessary to restore the gut to normal. In fact, he had me do Florastor, probiotics and diflucan for that entire month.

He had me stay on the anti-yeast diet for that entire month also.

I can't answer regarding using herbals.

However, a few years ago I decided that it would be a good move health-wise to just take one probiotic (same brand I used when I had lyme) per day for the rest of my life. I had read this advice on various health sites that had nothing to do with lyme. So, that is what I have been doing.

I have heard that it takes 6 months to repopulate the flora in your intestines after being on abx.

Personally, I will always take probiotics. It is a good idea if you want to keep your immune system up and running.

I used a product call HMF replete to repopulate my gut after antibiotics.

I had severe gut dysbiosis for 2 years after taking antibiotics because no one told me to take probiotics (this was years ago).

When I found an ND who could help, she tested me and I had zero good bacteria in my stomach (not low, zero).

HMF Replete did the trick back then. My gut was back in shape in 2 weeks.

Also let probiotics and probiotic foods "be" in your mouth for good amount of time. Our dental health really needs this, too.

Miso is just one "food" with good antibiotics and there is GMO-free, organic, even soy-free. Miso Master, I think, is the brand.

Brewer's Yeast (more correctly called Nutritional Yeast) that yellow flaky stuff is also excellent for probiotic content. Don't use too late in the day as it can be stimulating with its B-vitamin content.
