So, I recently had a scare with my heart/chest pain. ekg etc. was normal but the problems happened during azithromycin use and faded afterward. I took zith twice and stopped twice. Same reaction.

The pain meds i am on can cause prolonged qt interval but i had an ekg when i started the meds and it was fine. Combining that with zith is shown as an interaction as they can both cause prolonged qt interval.

I recently read this:(Macrolide antibiotics are also suspected to prolong the QT interval, after it was discovered recently that azithromycin was associated with an increase in cardiovascular death.[22]) I am no longer taking the zith. looking into changing pain meds.

So, there is another med, diflucan, which i have always taken with no problem but I have yet to take it again since this episode. After reading it can cause prolonged qt intervals, I am scared. My doc says no problem but I don't trust it.

are there symptoms of prolonged qt interval? What could happen?

Unfortunately, there can be no symptoms. A prolonged QT interval can cause the rythmn of the heart to change suddenly. Worse case scenario is death.

" Concomitant administration of drugs that inhibit the cytochrome P450 especially imidazole antifungals, macrolide antibiotics or those that can prolong the QT interval or drugs that cause electrolyte disturbance should be avoided. It is recommended to perform surveillance EKGs before and after initiation of QT-prolonging drugs.

I insisted on an EKG before co- artem. And I never took it within 3 days of diflucan - although my LLMD didn't seem too concerned. My cardiologist was!!
