Topic: Is it ok to take expired Plaquenil or Rifampin?

I will get new, but in the meantime, not sure.
I wanted to make sure that I could tolerate Plaquenil before I order it new, as I had a horrible reaction years ago, although it is possible that it was from the combo of meds that I did, and not the Plaquenil per se. Otherwise, I'd be ordering 3 months worth (that's how the rx is).
I also don't know if my doc will keep me on rifampin in my upcoming appt, so I hate to buy 3 months worth until I know.
I tried to check online, but wasn't getting a clear answer, esp to the Plaquenil. Thank you!

When you get meds from a pharmacy, they automatically expire in 1 yr. interestingly, the stock bottle they came from has a different expiration date. I often ask the pharmacy...what's the expiration date Ipoh the bottle?
Did you know malarone has a 5 year shelf life?
Rifampin has a 4 year shelf life, plaquenil is 3 years

Also, you can tell the pharmacy you only want one month's worth. Mine does that for me.
Then, they may only give you one month at a time after that, but you don't have to buy all 3 months right now.

Check the product inserts of both drugs. You can find them online if you don't have them. For expired drugs, there are two concerns: 1) not at potent; 2) the drug instability may produce byproducts that are toxic. The drug insert will warn you of the latter. For the former alone, there wouldn't be any harm other than you may not get the potency you desire. Still, most drugs are active after expiration dates and don't turn into pumpkins when the calendar passes that date. The date on the bottle mentioned above should be based on the manufacturing date and should be more accurate than the pharmacy's. Hope this helps.
