Ran across this journal article that does not appear to be indexed in pubmed.

This is a very unusual case as the patient had a clear chest xray on admission but developed ARDS on hospital day 4 and was placed on a ventilator. Babesia diagnosed on hospital day 6 by blood smears (notice the s - multiple smears not just one).

Wish the table showing blood values and anemia was available. Will have to write the author to request that info.

The patient was extubated on day 13, went to rehab on day 20 and released from the hospital 2 weeks later.

As has been illustrated in other case reports of acute babesia - the earlier treatment is initiated the better the outcome.

Might you talk with folks at the Red Cross, at the tip top. Bet at least one person there knows a lot about this. There's good reason they ban any blood / tissue donors for life who have been diagnosed with babesia, ever.

What documents might they have used for their wise decision that could help in your pursuits, I wonder?

And, do they follow current babesia-relevant events / mishaps / "saves" / protocol in medical settings?
