Suggestion: ask your doctor or home infusion company what they are mixing your IV antibiotics with. Because for some drugs, there is a choice of what they can use.
For example, Rocephin can be reconstituted with either a dextrose solution or a sodium chloride solution. Dextrose is CORN-DERIVED SUGAR ... so unless your doctor feels you should not use the sodium chloride solution for some medical reason (e.g. high blood pressure), you might want to ask your doctor whether you can use that instead of dextrose solution.
My hypothesis is that using dextrose, a form of sugar, might promote fungal growth to a greater extent than using sodium chloride solution.
Lastly, if you're going to be on IVs for a long time, I would ask the doctor whether it makes sense to do blood cultures periodically ... as added protection against developing sepsis or secondary infection.
Note: I'm not a healthcare professional. Just putting this issue out there for your consideration & discussion with your physician and home infusion company.
