Many Probiotics Taken for Celiac Disease Contain Gluten
- By Anahad O'Connor - The New York Times - May 19, 2015
Last year, doctors at Columbia University found that people with celiac disease frequently use probiotic supplements, but that those who take these products tend to experience more symptoms of the disease than those who do not.
Now these experts say they may know why: More than half of the top-selling probiotic supplements they analyzed contained gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley and rye that is harmful to people with celiac disease.
The authors of the study found gluten in probiotic supplements that carried “gluten-free” claims on their labels, and they discovered that the most expensive supplements were just as likely to contain gluten as the cheapest products. . . .
. . . " . . . Can anyone trust a gluten-free label?” . . . .
But, as with the NYT article, neither author nor doctors are concerned with sharing a LIST so that we might know what's good, what's not.
There seems an overall indictment not just against probiotics but against all supplements. Something seems amiss.
They could be teaching us how to discern, how to find the very best brands, etc. but, instead, they just call for a stop to all supplements, basically.
I wonder if they have ties to the pharmaceutical industry ? If so, [and it's so likely] that could color not just the study but how it's designed.
Something is coloring the end message here.
The end message should be on how to identity the good brands, not to say they are all suspect when that is not at all true.
It would also be a good step to help clean up any error that may have occurred here inadvertently. They could make probiotics safer. Instead, they seem to want to just stomp them out.
I want to see a list. And then it would be nice to have this repeated by a different group, other location / equipment.
Where's the list? They have left many questions unanswered and provide no link to find out more. Not the best academic / professional behavior. -
