I have posted elsewhere about profound psych issues I experienced since beginning gluten/sugar free diet.

Some I have had before and some are new onset.

Which TBI or parasite is known to cause the most severe psychiatric issues?

I was treated with 5 years of abx for Lyme, Babesia, Ehrlichi from 1998-2001.

Not treated for Bartonella-- back in 1998 I don't think they tested for it.

Could this be Bart?? Could I have triggered a die-off by the diet?

I have an appt. with a new LLMD in a week and I want to know what to ask.

Thanks!

It seems odd that just cutting out gluten and sugar would do this - unless you aren't getting enough other good foods.

Yes, in some ways, candida die-off can cause issues yet, one question that pops to mind is about glucose stability.

I can't address infections but low blood sugar can really cause a lot of very serious psychological symptoms that feel just awful.

Are you getting enough complex carbohydrates (balanced with protein and good fats)?

Too often, someone cutting out gluten / sugar may go far too low in carbohydrates and blood sugar can just plummet. Veggies with every meal and for snacks, too, might be of help.

But other "grains" such as Black, Red & Wild Rice, Quinoa, Buckwheat groats, millet, etc. are also essential in helping veggies get carried over long enough to the next time for food.

When I cut out all other non-gluten grains, I was a terrible wreck. I really need these, in small amounts, but still really matter to my body and brain and psyche.

I had severe psych sx and I think it was from bart.

my one child had some bad behavioral sx too including aggression and strange episodes of unstable mental something that were really scary BUT he did not test pos. for bart nor was he treated for it, AND his symptoms went away with his treatments which were all herbal and specific for these:

Necator
Bacteroides
Strep
Rickettsia
Varicella

so it must have been one of those causing his sx.

I had severe psych issues and thought it was Bart. Rifampicin even helped somewhat to lower the psych symptoms.

But now im finding out is has more to do with bad gut flora. Ive dropped all abx (which i was very scared to do) and started GAPS introduction diet. And guess what? My mental symptoms are more stable than ever before!

Whoa, S13, I'm so glad that issue is stabilizing for you!

So, how long have you been off ABX and been doing the GAPS diet?

About a month now.

Its all about taking away everything that feeds bacteria and other pathogens in the gut first. That includes fiber and vegetables for me. (if i add in vegetables at this stage i will get a resurgence of symptoms). Vegetables will be added back in later, but only after more good flora has established, and that may take many months, even with loads of probiotic and fermented foods. Also eating very easily digestible nourishing foods to strengthen the gut, the immune system and the body.

I do think my blood sugar might have gotten too low as I had kidney stones and it was hard to eat.

Since I'm eating more (healthy foods), I'm feeling better, less terrifying episodes but still feel adrenals are constantly pumping.

Will also ask LLMD about Bartonella.

What are other sx of Bart? thanks, everyone

Lisa would you mind private messaging me, or posting the herbs your son used?

I am thinking strep is in the mix with my lyme and bart. I never get a positive culture, but often get a positive rapid strep test.

Also, my Bart combined with lyme is causing severe OCD, and anxiety / panic attacks. Some times really horrible anger too that I have to contain.

Anger about things that don't even make sense, but I feel like I want rip the room to shreds.

I was also originally tested back in `98, but no one was testing for Bartonella at the time. I came up positive for Bart multiple times through ART testing in recent years. My pych issues are absolutely horrible and by far my worst issues. I have grown to handle any type of physical pain or discomfort. I refuse all pain medication through all my surgeries at the hospital, and it was no big issue for me, while everyone thought I was nuts. Until anyone has suffered serious psych issues, they will never understand.

So yeah, my vote is for Bartonella!

Thank you NJ and I am very sorry you are going through this as well.

Are there any lab tests now that can reliably test for Bart?

Thank You. Hope you feel better as well.

I think Galaxy has a fairly accurate blood culture test, but I don't think there are any 100% full proof tests out there.

Ok, good info., NJ, as I will be seeing a new LLMD on Monday.

Question: does Bart cause muscle knots all over the body?

Any sx of Bart that might be slightly different from other TBI?

Staying regular with magnesium has helped this last week.

Read pages 24 and 26 of Burrascano for the symptoms unique to bartonella.

http://www.lymenet.org/BurrGuide200810.pdf

Bart causes subcutaneous (under the skin) nodules (solid lumps) on various parts of the body, as you will see. Shins are common. Sometimes triceps.

Another unique symptom is red linear (in a line) rashes that look something like huge scratch lines but are red lines under the skin. They come and go.

Here is a website with a number of pictures of the bart rashes:

http://www.lymediseaseassociation.org/index.php/about-lyme/medical-lyme/medical-photos/category/27-bartonella

Not everyone gets these symptoms, of course. I just got the burning or sore soles of the feet a few times and lots of abdominal pain. Lots. And severe. The ER once did a full body scan of me expecting to find appendicitis. They found nothing. I could barely walk and talk due to the pain.

Then, after 10 days, it went away.

Thanks TF. sorry you went through that abdominal pain. That sounds awful

I looked at the Burrascano info. but I still don't know. I'm so tired of trying to figure things out.

Hopefully the new doc will steer me in a logical and accurate direction.

Ask the new lyme doc to test you for bart through Igenex. Tell him you want at least 2 different tests for it.

SacredHeart, I am sure I mentioned this to you before, but,

you mention Lyme Bart OCD and strep, and OCD and anger are plaguing you.

One of the leading treatments for this exact description in PANDAS/PANS kids, that are near/ at adult size,

is Augmentin XR 1,000 mg 2x a day. I think it is worth a trial for you. I can go on with leading Dr. references, books, etc. but really just FYI again, my daughter has had this suffering,

Augmentin stopping it in it's tracks. Can tell early whether helps or not.

low positive Fry biofilm test, 2012.

Hi Joe,

Yes Magnesium is definitely helping. Glad it worked for both of us.

Another thing that helped me is eating more. I went to my acupuncturist and she said my pulses were very weak.

When I had kidney stones a few weeks ago, it was hard to eat and hard to know what to eat.

Eating more, esp. protein, has helped alleviate some of the worst twisted thoughts.

I am still passing worms every day so you are right it is hard to sort this all out as to what is causing what sx.

Joe- were you originally dx'd with TBIs and if so which ones?

TF: thanks for the recommendation. I will ask the new doc for the Bart tests.

I was initially misdiagnosed for 6 months(surprise surprise).

I ended up at a llmd who took insurance and diagnosed me with lyme but because I didn't have a positive blood test she told me I needed IV but her hands were tied because of all the lyme political crap(surprise surprise)

Anyways I ended up going to a few well known LLMDs for various reason and Ive had countless tests done for lyme and all co-infections and then some.Same ole story for most of us.

This is just my opinion but seems to me if you fish long enough and send tests out to very sensitive labs you will probably get a few positives back or equivicals.

98 percent of my test came back negative,I did get one positive for lyme, bet you can guess what lab.

I also got a positive for bart and a positive fish test, but like I said I got countless negatives on all these tests too.

Im not sure I had bart or babs but I did the meds,I would have done anything.
