Hi All,

When I eat nightshades, I feel comatose directly afterwards usually until I nap/sleep. Then I will feel notably more sluggish and out of it for another day or two. Does anyone else have a fatigue response to nightshades?

The nightshade family includes tomatoes, potatoes, peppers and eggplant. Peppers are by far the most pervasive as they are in all kinds of food as spices. I have been actively avoiding the whole family for over a year. It helps me stay functional day to day, but avoiding them does not get rid of my general fatigue symptoms, it just helps prevent spikes in fatigue.

I tested positive for Lyme and for Bart through Igenex, so I am curious to know if this is specific to one or the other.

Are these vegetables organic? If not, that could certainly cause lots of reactions.

Actually, there has been a lot of headway in disproving the myth about nightshades causing pain & inflammation across the board.

They may do so for some but that would be an individual reaction. I was pleased to figure out it made no difference to me at all, no changes by avoiding at all.

Yet, green bell peppers really did me in, so that is one vegetable I avoid.

Still, you have found it helps to avoid the whole family of nightshades, so it's good to do that. As for why it's not enough for you to feel better,

Lyme and Bartonella are likely the major cause of symptoms. Both those can cause major fatigue of severe magnitude.

Hope you have a good lyme literate doctor (likely if you were tested with Igenex) and that you will soon start treatment.

Yes, Lyme can trigger food allergies and sensitivities. Or maybe it's that you've always had an underlying sensitivity but could manage it pre-Lyme, and now your body is just dealing with too much.

Still, as WPinVA points out, lyme can trigger food allergies and sensitivities.

Farm chemicals can, too, especially regarding ORGANOPHOSPHATES chemicals that often just soak many fields of conventional potatoes.

That is why all vegetables consumed are best when organically grown, but more so with potatoes than any other food.

Along this line, there are a few individuals who become allergic - actually allergic - to red meat (and some to all meat) after a tick bite.

So, it's entirely possible that a tick bite &/or lyme (or other infection) might also cause other reactions in a certain "family" of food for some people dealing with lyme, etc. but not necessarily for all.

The nightshade family can cause inflammation in people who already have inflammation...aka anybody with Lyme Disease. I cut out all of them out of my diet a few years ago and it helped quite a bit.

Now when I accidentally have anything with tomatoes in it I get a headache and fatigue and jaw pain. I used to be full on exhausted with full body pain and could not turn my neck, so its gotten better with treatment.

If you can I suggest doing a trial run where you cut them all out and reintroduce and see how you do. For more info you could look up AIP protocol-the paleomom.com is helpful. You obviously don't need to do the whole diet, but there is good info there.

I get tired when I eat eggplant. sometimes tomatoes.

but they all (nightshades) give me eczema if I eat them for 2-3 days in a row. used to be worse pre treatment.

I don't eat too many of any of these, but when I crave them I eat them for a day or 2without much issue. I think if my body needs something in them then there is a reason I am craving them and then I don't worry too much about it.

other foods make me way tired-er. like wheat. or a combo of grains and dairy.
