Finally got in to see the Lyme specialist in our area ... here is the treatment plan she recommended. Trying to share with others that have experience with this disease to see if there are any watch outs before my husband begins the plan ... any cautions, anything we should add, do differently?? Seems intense ...

*Cefuroxime (Ceftin) 500mg 1 pill, twice daily with food
*Minocycline 100mg 1 pill, twice daily with food
*Rifampin 150mp 2 pills, twice daily with food
*Monthly blood draws to monitor that the drugs are not causing any damage to liver, kidneys or bone marrow
*Magnesium Chelate, Glycinate or maleate to decrease pain, improve sleep. Start with 500mg and increase as able up to 1000-2000mg daily
*Methylcobalamin (Vitamin B12) to help repair nerve damage. 25mg daily
*Probiotics, daily and consistently. At least 100-200 billion count
*Keep a diary of symptoms. Specifically to track the cycle of Herxheimer (die off) reactions. This is when the drugs are killing more bacteria than the body can handle. You will feel worse during these 1-3 day periods. When they occur, write it down and stop medications until you feel back to your "normal" self. To help with pain during the Herx periods, drink lots of water and green tea, take epsom salt baths, and/or Benadryl at night
*Visits to Lyme specialist every 2-3 months to review symptoms and progress

Thanks for your thoughts, advice and prayers [Smile]

Dr. B recommends 1,000 cefuroxime twice daily in his guidelines, I believe. That's the most effective dosage in my experience, too. Give it a few months to work, but it is great stuff.

The other abx can be added later once he plateaus. Flagyl should be added somewhere down the line as a challenge to get the cysts.

What about babesia? Rifampin will target bartonella.

In my experience...

I ramped up to the Dr. B recommended dose of ceftin in the beginning, and it was my go-to antibiotic for a lot of my treatment.

In the beginning, all my symptoms were exacerbated when I started treatment. A lot of those symptoms came and went pretty quickly.

But the beginning part of treatment was rough.

The prevailing symptom of ceftin has been stomach issues. It's really tough on my digestion.

I've tried other antibiotics too, but the ceftin proved the most effective.

minocycline can cause dizziness...doesn't mean not to take it as it can be very good - just something to watch out for.
