Hi All! Currently I've had my PICC line for 6 weeks now and my LLMD has me on ceftriaxone twice a day and flagyl twice a week. I'm also on mepron and azithromycin. Obviously with all these antibiotics I'm taking my yeast has been getting out of control.
Currently, I'm taking nystatin and caprylic acid daily. For probiotics I'm taking VSL 3 and Saccharomyces Boulardii. Still, my yeast is getting out of control particularly in my mouth. My tongue almost stings and feels weird. My question is, is there anything else I could be taking/doing to keep my yeast in check and help my gut?

When Nystatin wasn't doing enough for me, my LLMD gave me a script for Clotrimazole lozenges that you melt in your mouth. They got rid of my thrush very quickly.

See page 34 of Burrascano. Scrub your tongue and entire mouth as he directs to scrub off as much yeast as you can. You can do it twice per day.
Use a 50-50 solution of peroxide and water or Listerine, etc.
Be sure to hold it in your mouth as he directs. After you have scrubbed thoroughly, then rinse with water and open a probiotic capsule and sprinkle it on your tongue. This will help restore normal flora on your tongue.
Let that sit on your tongue until it is totally dissolved which could take 30 minutes.
Keep cleaning off your tongue as needed and hopefully after a few days you will notice a big difference on the tongue and entire mouth. Don't let this go.

TF, if I were to completely stop all of these antibiotics, would the flora in my mouth return to normal on its own? Or is this just a consequence of taking long term antibiotics?

Yeast is a normal thing to grow in our mouth and gut. However, it is usually kept in check by the other good bacteria.
When you take antibiotics, it kills everything and the bad yeast grows back the fastest. So, you get an overgrowth of yeast. That is what we call "getting yeast."
Once it overgrows, you have to kill it and "fertilize" the good bacteria to get back to a normal balance.
So, just stopping antibiotics will NOT get you back in normal balance. It's like all the weeds in your grass have taken over. Now, you need to kill the weeds and fertilize the grass.
Once you are out of balance, you must take steps to get back in balance. When taking flagyl, yeast overgrowth is extremely common. To counteract that, you MUST be 100% on the anti-yeast diet and no cheating.
When I was on flagy (250 mg 3 times per day for 60 days), any time I even cheated a little, I got the overgrowth. One bite of a brownie was enough to cause it.
And, if you go on with an overgrowth, it can become much more difficult to get rid of. So, you must try to keep it under control the entire time you are treating.
No bread, no fruit,no potatoes, no rice, etc. just like Burrascano says. All I ate basically was meat and non-starchy vegetables.
It was just not worth it each time I got a yeast overgrowth and had to call my lyme doc and be asked what I ate before he would call in an Rx for diflucan. This is how they educate you.
So, scrub your tongue any time you notice a yeast overgrowth. Do everything to keep the yeast down to a manageable level. Then, you can continue your treatment.
If you obey the rules you don't have to get a yeast overgrowth. But, while on flagyl in particular, the yeast will take every opportunity to overgrow. See Burrascano page 15 where he tells the rules while on flagyl. You must be very strict with what you eat while on this med.

Thank you for the useful information. Up until this point, I've been aware of the anti-yeast diet but have not followed it very strictly. It's all just a little overwhelming for me.

Just know that if you have a good coating of yeast on your tongue when you first get up in the morning, you will likely need your doc to call in an Rx for diflucan which kills yeast.
Check your tongue before you eat or drink anything in the morning. That will tell you how bad your case is.
In the gut, yeast will cause severe bloating, abdominal pain, fatigue, and so many other symptoms that it is just as bad as lyme.
Nystatin cannot kill lyme. It just discourages its growth. So, once you have yeast, you need a yeast killer like the Rx Diflucan.

Ya my LLMD has actually put me on 10 days of Diflucan twice now. I just finished up the second dose recently which seems to have helped but I guess I need to start being more proactive about fighting it and keeping it under control.
